Then there's Sony's recent alienation of consumers (predominantly female) via the blatantly sexist and, frankly, bizarre Playstation Portable ad campaign that ran throughout the during winter and spring. These ads highlighted the PSP's various features, such as its download capabilities, by stating "Spend A Night In Paris Here", a not especially subtle reference to the Paris Hilton sex tape. Or there's the focus on the PSP's photographic transfer ability via Memory Stick Duo, by stating "Your Girlfriend's White Bits Here", suggesting 'boys' would like to do nothing more worthwhile with a than carry naked pictures of their partners on it. And, finally, there's "Escape From Your Girlfriend's Pointless Questions Here", which leads 'boys' (again) to lose themselves in a UMD rather than speanding time with their girlfriend. And it wasn't just limited to the UK either, as a similarly banal and offensive graffiti-based PSP ad campaign caused considerable furore in the US too. Both ad campaigns add up to yet more indications that could be growing disassociated with its consumers.

Most recently, Sony compounded that overriding notion of 'self' when, during May's E3 2006, it revealed the full features of the Playstation 3, as well as its supposedly 'new' controller, and the console's final price point. First of all, the Playstation 3's 'full' features include very little that's not already on offer from Microsoft's in terms of 'next-gen'; specifically concerning Sony's fledgling (better late than never) service that's certainly going to struggle to match the track record of Live, and also the built-in, but as yet unproven, DVD drive that will go head-to-head against the 360's external HD-DVD drive. After all the drooling anticipation, the new Playstation 3 controller emerged as nothing more than a revamped Dual Shock controller (minus the Shock feature), with an in-built motion sensor - which smacks of a desperate attempt at integrating some semblance of innovation into an otherwise under whelming package (considering Sony's posturing).

Then there's the most contentious issue that's presently surrounding the Playstation 3: its price. Presently set at an astonishingly high 599 USD/425 GBP for the 60GB hard drive bundle, the Playstation 3 comes in at close to 200 USD/150 GBP more than the 360's Premium package - while, on the whole, offering less. A slew of Sony execs have feverishly defended the PS3's pricing with all manner of intriguing reasons, including the amazing statement that it's actually a lot cheaper than it should be (some comfort) given the advanced Cell processor and Blu-ray DVD drive, and also that, despite the price, a clear 5.0 million units of the Playstation 3 would still sell comfortably even if there were no games to play on it. Conceit gone wild? Most notable in this vein is the statement by Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi in Famitsu (Japan's leading videogame magazine) where he attempted to defend the indefensible by saying, "If you consider the Playstation 3 a toy, then yes, it is an expensive toy. However, it is more than a toy. It is a Playstation 3. And it is the only Playstation 3." Sony's arrogance seemingly knows no bounds, especially as the Playstation 3, while perhaps not a 'toy', is certainly not a Dialysis Machine either. A little perspective, if you please, Ken.

Throughout all this gathering critical negativity directed toward Sony from all quarters of the industry, has been biding its time, honing its strategy, perfecting its pitch, and preparing itself for a full-on attack to reclaim the gaming crown it once so proudly wore. Just prior to E3 2006, Nintendo announced to a shocked world that Codename: Revolution was officially renamed the Nintendo Wii. Of course, all eyes suddenly shifted from and Sony's constant backbiting - and with a name like Wii, is it any wonder? Intrigue and contentious discussion was instantly rife across the Internet, and the way was torn clear for Nintendo to pull the rug out from beneath both of the game's supposed hard hitters. The Wii, its innovative 'Wiimote' control system, its dynamic fun factor, and its incredibly low price point of 250 USD/£135-150 GBP (UK price currently unconfirmed) duly delivered the goods throughout E3, with Nintendo proudly stating that "Wii will change the way you play" - and they could so easily be right. The Nintendo was recently honoured at the E3 Game Critics Awards where it scooped 'Best Hardware' and the much-coveted 'Best of Show', along with other game-specific too. And, further to the Wii's glowing E3 notoriety, Famitsu magazine ran a survey of its Japanese readers that asked which console they were most looking forward to. Almost 70% of those polled opted for the Wii, whereas the Playstation 3 came in with just over 20%, and the 360 hobbled in with a lowly 8%. And still Sony shows no signs of unrest. It is truly amazing that a possible implosion seems plainly on the cards, yet Sony remains staunchly unworried by the and instead chooses to sink deeper into those well worn brand laurels.

The day of reckoning fast approaches, and 17 November 2006 will reveal much. Of course, the Playstation 3 will receive masses of consumer loyalty, and will most likely still emerge as the next-gen market leader. However, Sony's lead may well be incremental in terms of measurement rather than its present gaming country mile. Where the competition is concerned, Microsoft will cement a solid consumer spread with the Xbox 360, and in particular through its improved service, which continues to be the heart of Microsoft's gaming ethos. But when it comes to Nintendo, the fallen giant of gaming, just don't be surprised if and when it wrestles that tarnished gaming crown from Sony's ungrateful though not completely undeserving head.

    Hi,

I wonder why it suddenly is so hip to do some Playstation bashing? Is it because they are the market leader on the gaming front? I find it weird they get "punished" in all kind of reviews for having the best console and therefor selling it at a higher price. My point being who wouldn't want to pay more just to get a lot more. I agree the wii might be innovating, but I wonder for how long a new controller will be innovative. In my opnion it will be fun as long as it's new, but once that's gone, what remains? I guess it will sell good to kids but I don't know one hardcore gamer who wants to stand in front of his screen throwing his controller to the left and the right and up and down. I just feel like there going after two different market segments and therefor they shouldn't be compared because they aren't comparable. It's like lego and duplo, they're both fun to play with but you won't play with duplo when you're over 6.

I agree on most points but the more I read about sony's 'incredible' price the more I've come to resent it, the xbox 360 is more expensive if you'd have to add all the features the ps3 has (I much doubt the HD-DVD drive will come in under $150 which puts the premium system only $50 behind the premium ps3 which has standard blue-ray, this is speculation of course but the extras ps3 has are rarely considered in the 'pricey' argument), granted some people won't need the extra features but considering the HD-DVD drive is an add-on, xbox 360 has 2 choices, either limit their games to standard dvds or make some games using HD forcing gamers who want to play those games to buy the add on.

The difference between the graphics I agree is indeed little but here I come to remember the difference between the SNES games when it first came out and the donkey kong games that came out in the end which was quite an advance in graphics at the time. Developers rarely exploit a consoles full capabilities right away, wether this is because they're not familiar with the hardware or there is some other reason I leave in the middle but to me this has always been a fact and I wouldn't be surprised that in a year or 2 you'll see the ps3 break off graphic-wise from the xbox360.

Anyway I could be wrong and the format wars will probably have a huge influence but I think right now a lot of folks are underestimating sony.

Where do I start with this beat-up which strikes me as a string of misleading 'FUD'? (all of which sound familar.. I suspect PR astroturfing).

    1) You raise the possible scary tactic of Sony maybe locking games to a console. Which Sony never said they would do, have explictly denied and would require the games makers (EA etc) not Sony to do. So why bring it up? To create scary rumours.

    2) That 'massive' price.. the base unit price is US$500 - only $100 (thats just two games) more than a Xbox360. For you US$100 you get much the same as the premium Xbox360 (i.e. fast next gen console, 20Gb drive etc) but you get HD output and a HD drive which is worth far more than the $100 - and of course a 3-axis tilt sensitive controller. Note that HD TV's cost more than standard TV's, but plasmas and LCD TV's are a big selling item at the moment?

    3) You mention that the PS2 was widely successful despite being more expensive than a Gamecube; why? Hint - backward compatiblity with thousands of PS1 games. The PS3 runs thousands of PS2 and PS1 games - far more than the Xbox360, and looks to have a lot of support for this gen as well. The PS2 was also successful for including a DVD (expensive feature at the time).

    4) You say really odd things like the PS3's "unproven, Blu-ray DVD drive that will go head-to-head against the 360's external HD-DVD drive". That is the BluRay (not DVD) drive which stores some 50GB of data/games/.movies will go head-to-head with the unproven, unpriced, unreleased external (25GB) add-on HD-Drive from Microsoft which will probably make the Xbox as expensive if not more than the PS3. And you may want to stop & think about the fact that most studio's are releasing HD movies for Blu-ray not HD. And if any game maker releases a HD game on HD-DVD most Xbox360 owners won't be able to play it until they buy the add-on.. and why buy one until games need it? Classic add-on chicken & egg problem.

I like the sound of the Wii - Nintendo are doing a lot right , but consoles have one purpose - that is playing games. Its going to depend on the exclusive games that are out. I didn't buy a GameCube because it didn't have the games like Gran Turismo, Halo or Grand Theft Auto that I wanted to play.
My worry with the Wii is that I buy it, play tennis/sword games on that neat remote for I while & find that I am missing out on some awesome games on the other consoles like Gran Turismo HD - it looks stunning & I am looking forward to it.

first of all i agree that playstation3 isnt all that fabulous. Granted that the hardware is impressive but as a software developer i know it would not be very simple writing code for it.
I do think that Microsoft has done a fabulous job with the 360 and have done a better job than sony.
The Nintendo wii with its catchy name has stolen the show and i wouldnt mind getting one (feel like it goes in my pocket).
But i have to admit , the tone of your article might put some people off. This is not journalism.

Your article is far too anti-establismentarian. It is ridiculous to criticise Sony before the release of the playstation 3 regardless of the rumours. It is all hype and hearsay aimed at upsetting the trend for great consoles by Sony. The real shame of it all is that you give so much credit alternatively to the ultimate corporation Microsoft when we have yet to see how the playstation 3 will compare with xbox 360.

  7. Concerned Reader Unregistered 3 years ago

Talk about an article based on hate, twistedhalf truths and outright lies!

#1 Microsoft created the FALSE demand issue. They intentionally shorted the production runs of the 360. This was due to two reasons. #1 complete Q&A had not been completed on the 360 and if recalls had to be issued the numbers would not be so monumental...and guess what, good thing they did...bad drives, bad power supplies, over heating, etc.

#2 With the false supply and demand established it allowed price jacking and a PR element that the said to all that the system was awesome and due to it being awesome everyone is buying it, must be good so OK for me to get it as well. SHAME ON YOU MS!

Your entire article is compeltely basis simply on the fact you say the PS3 has nothing more to offer then the 360. I guess you consider the cell processor which will by no small means out power the 360 by over a factor of 6. The built in WI-FI, you must pay $99 for with the 360, blue ray included, a feature to come later via an add-on drive for the 360. Anyone remember a company that released add-ons for a console system? A add-on drive for a system called the 32x? Sort of died eh?

I recommend Sir or Ma'am you get your facts straight before ever posting an article of such dribble ever again.

Oh, BTW.....I got a 2nd run 360, not a bad system, games need to get better and MS needs to 2nd think the pricing for LIVE. Sony has online play as well, but guess cause it is free you think it is crap.

I also own several other console systems, mostly sega, nintendo, and sony. Sony has been a very heavy company that has repeated taken care of its user base and went out of its way to make sure we get when we pay for. I am not however saying SONY is perfect. Far from it. Wish all too much they would find another company to make the drives for the systems they build as they have failed in the PS, PS2, and most likely in the PSP and PS3 is history repeats. Oh well, guess I will just keep using my PS2 upside down till then. :)

I guess she's against SONY in this one, because they are the megalo company... but so are M$ and Nintendo :P

The PS3 doesn't seem to be overpriced if the hardware specs on the net are the actual console ones... I mean... c'mon, we all know linux guru's will orgasm over this one.

In regards to the harddrive factor... I'd say buy the cheapest one, or try to get a deal with a smaller harddrive or none at all ... and then just buy your own and add it to the system (no amount of gigs will be enough to quench the gamer's thirst), as we all know from experience these consoles are very versatile and succum easily to modifications.

I personally would rather play on my home made console, my computer, it plays all my favourite games, and better graphics than any console... except maybe the PS3 depending on whether or not this whole cell processor thing is legit.... and how the programmers write the multi-core code in..... I don't think that should be a problem for professionals... call of duty 2 runs stellar on my dual core & SLi system.

As the for the bashing of sony, maybe they deserve it for cockyness, and for trying to control gamer's rights to share their games with their friends (if u can't share your games who are you going to play with ???? ...ugly strangers, I guess ahahhahaha jk) then that's understandable, but bashing because of console support?!? I don't get it... not having an online subscription is a GOOD THING... one less thing to worry about every month... I know it's gotten rediculous with WoW, this whole subscription thing hinders human freedom, indirectly, and when you'll figure it out it will be too late... for you that is ;)

    my breakdown:

X-box is for the impatient and anxious
Wii is for the young at heart
PS3 is for the hardcore fiend that needs a good lay

I would've agreed with you until this week. However, it appears somebody screwed up somewhere and the Cell processor is broken. It isn't going to perform anywhere near what you expect it will. Local memory read speed has been hobbled and PS3 devs are being asked to read from main memory instead - big performance problem.

Hah all you sony people that dont like to hear the truth ... sony has lost the plot with its power. they ddont care about thier customers, they just want money but the first rule of anything along these lines is ... thier customers. thier market comes from people who wish that sony was how it was in the past with the ps1 but its not going to happen. the crown for this gen may very well go to nintendo and when people start buying products and not brands they will realize how wrong they have been .

  11. kirameki Unregistered 3 years ago

To the Main article: Honestly, I didn't even bother reading most of it. I found the comments more interesting. As soon as I started reading the bias against Sony was glaringly obvious. One shouldn't write an article like this at least until the PS3 is officially released and we've been able to see what it can do. And even then it should be looked at from an unbiased point of view. This bash Sony bandwagon has gotten old. Really old.

    For Mac: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=17547
Hope that clears things up. That article you gave(if it's the one spoken of here) is bogus.

For Matt N.: Sony wants money? So does Nintendo and Microsoft. So does any company no matter how big or small. Why would you want a Next Gen system to be like the PS1? That would be moving backwards not forwards. Nintendo has pretty much dropped from the serious console wars. They are no longer targetting gamers as their audience. That's why the price tag is so cheap. Microsoft rushed release to be the first one on the scene, but really I haven't seen anything to make me rush to buy. Sony however actually looks more like what I thought a NextGen console would be. They aren't playing it safe for the general public. They are giving a console that will provide for their gamers future needs without worrying about stupid add-ons that would actually end up upping the price. X-box 360 is almost the same price as the PS3 with all those add-ons most likely. Honestly, I'm waiting to see how things happen which one I'll buy, but I'm leaning more towards Sony since despite their arrogance they seem to have released the most solid gaming system of the 3. And the games previewed at E3 look fabulous. Realtime battles in cutscene quality. Oh yeah, I'm definitely biting.

Hear what truth? The PS3 lineup of games just shatter anything the X360 has coming, with the only saving grace being Halo 3.

  18. Farai Unregistered 3 years ago

    I've already pre-ordered a PS3 for £425, and i'll tell you why.

    1) Sony take the time to perfect products that will hold value and ride the waves of change better than most other products on the mass market. Don't state Xbox 360's quick time-to-market as an advantage that'll last long - the 'already-out-of-date' pc-sourced hardware will be out-performed by the Cell-based system well into future-gen territories, simply because it's much more advanced. MS could have waited a bit and stuffed dual-core pc processors into that thing and stood a better chance, but maybe the investors were waiting for crumbs..

    2) The loyalty sony enjoys from its customers is well earned. As with any mass-market product, longevity, physical quality, general customer satisfaction, accessibility of all products associated with the device, a unique ability to generate a feeling of familiarity with a brand new product etc.. mean that the PS3 is being waited on by loads of folks including myself.

    3) Price is not an issue - not when the product clearly demonstrates what a bargain it is. If you assembled everything the premium PS3 will offer, and try the same with the rubbish from Redmond, you'd realise that Sony have done away with petty price wars, and simply said "here it is, as good as it'll need to be over the next couple of years!".. I hate companies that strap people down with invisible reigns simply for walking past their stables. I know what i'm getting when i buy Sony - how many Microsoft customers can say that with the confidence i can?!?

I'll probably get a Wii as well, just to spite XBOX and boost Nintendo's numbers, and also be able to play Mario games every now and again. What exactly do i need a middle-of the road console for???

The Sony PS3s Cell CPU and features are barely mentioned in this article.

The PS3 will be able to do all of these things at THE SAME TIME...

Browse the web or check e-mail on a computer monitor
Play 2 player game on two separate HDTV screens
Have the scores or a spectator view displayed on a standard composite television

This is possible through the high speed streaming capabilities of the Cell processor, using extended video modes.

These kind of features are not and will never be present on the XBOX360.

What does this mean for the average person?

Stop upgrading your ever slower Windows machines. Use your PS3 instead, check your e-mail on your HDTV, or on a standard TV or computer monitor if the HDTV is in use. For gaming multiscreen is absolutely intense.

Some games are being built to use all of the outputs if you have them ... computer monitor, standard television and two hdtv screens. Talk about immersive

As far as I can see, an Xbox 360, fully upgraded, costs less than the cheapest PS3. The graphics on the PS3 are no better than what the 360 can do. They're putting a motion sensor in the sony controller, but only one game (warhawk) is planning to use it. I always prefered the xbox to the PS2; the 'exclusive' games like PGR2 and halo are awesome, and at any partys we would always use xboxes linked up.
This first guy says its at a higher price, has anyone heard what this price is? Well, it's £340 for the standard and £400 for the upgraded! Their sales are going to be way down; and its delayed until november or something.
What annoys me is the way some people have a mindless loyalty to sony, especially if they haven't even tried an xbox.

Nice post Concerned Reader, This article is written in past tense form, as if the PS3 has been on the market for months and everyones giving it bad reviews. Writer, this may be your honest opinion. But you cant try to state fact on on a gaming console that hasn't even come off the shelves yet. What you can do is post positive re-marks about what you like. But save the reviews for when you have actually reviewed what your talking about. Besides everyone knows why XBOX launched so soonas they did. Because they know that most serious gaming consumers would opt to pay 100 more bucks for the PS3 if the had a choice in consoles. But thats just my opinion.

"the Playstation 3 comes in at close to 200 USD/150 GBP more than the 360's Premium package - while, on the whole, offering less."

Please tell me how the PS3 offers less!! I'm not saying which console is better, but as for offerings that add value (and increase price), PS3 offers more. If you think that a blue-ray drive, a 60gig hard drive (40 extra), and memory slots are not worth 200 dollars then you're insane. True, some people may not want/need them, but for those who do it's a good deal. I could go on and on about this article, it is ridiculous.

The PS3 uses different chips and more advanced chips then the PS2, now if you're talking about the PS2 chip thats going to go in for backwards compatability, then yea, no duh they are the same. The PS2 uses PS1 hardware for backwards compatablity. I just wanna know if you're talking about something else...

..becuase as far as I know. You cant dowload Movies, Music, and other thinhgs on your PS2. And with what Im hearing from Sony. The PS3 will be able to do that this generation. Now I beleive them this time around cuase the 360 is doing it pretty much, and Wii, SO they will HAVE TOO becuase thier competiters are doing it. But I questioned Sony's promises becuase they promised the same for the PS2 but never happened.

sorry for posting so many times in a roll ^_^

Yo you know that PS3 has Wireless Controller right?
Well I searched that PS2 has also a wireless controller it's called Logitech Wireless Controller for PS2 and, PS2 can also do movies and they
say that PS2 is a console within the PS3.I went
alot of websites still PS2 78% and PS3 32% some
are tied so,many people believed that PS2 and PS3
are so the same I'm not here to argue with you
I'm just telling you about ELECTRONICS.Here If it was
the PS3 season and your dad (example)tells you.
What would you choose Dreamcast or nothin
it's better that you can play with better than nothin.
Don't tell me you're going to force him to buy
Wii or PS3 or Xbox 360 If I were you I'd rather choose
    Dreamcast better than NOTHING.

The PS3 is targeted at the Japanese and Japanese type games (RPG's like FF etc) and the Xbox is targeted at Americans and the games they like (FPS like Halo). Can anyone think of a great Japanese FPS for the PS2 or a great American RPG for the PS2? So fighting about system performace makes no sense as they'll both be the best at the games they're designed for. The console battle will be won by the console with the better software (it always is) and as long as trhe Xbox is only developed on by Americans and the PS3 is developed on by everyone Sony will always come on tops because not everyone likes FPS and War based games. As for the Wii, who knows, but unless they make a controller that allows you to sit and play games with mimial effort I don't see it taking off.

let me ask you what kind of system you own presently, o wait . . . I already know. Just because you're an XBOX fanatic doesn't mean it's a better system. Everyone has a different style and taste. Get over it.

Sony isn't putting up nearly enough hype to get the PS3 off the ground. There's nothing wrong with the system or the games (for the most part). They just lack decent customer relations, and have lost track with their audience.

I've owned a PS2 since its launch and I recently bought a GC. I must say that, as I bought a SNES as my first console, I support Nintendo 100%.

I have no doubts about the power (etc.) of the 360. The only thing that draws me away from it is the fact that it was made purely to make money from people who dont own powerful computers.

All in all, Jeremiah is right. Get over it. Buy whatever the hell you want. If you want to get ridiculed, carry on spreading your advertisments all over the internet. It's your choice.

Bull, dont rate a brand new system thats bairly 2-3 months old. Give it some time before you(or anyone) judges the price so soon. $499 360 + game and another controller allready costs just as much as the ps3.

i just want to say I am writing this on my ps3 and i have not one problem with it. It runs perfect doing anything and everything i want it to I have always been a completely loyal customer to song. and i have gone as far as to never bothering getting an xbox or the 360. i would rather light that $300 on fire than spend it on anything microsoft

    Hi,

I'm 21, and I am a gamer since 1992. During all these years, I played on almost all videogaming systems.
Sony made really powerfull gaming consoles, and I will always remember these moments when I played for hours and hours my PlayStation. Now things been changed. We have Xbox 360, we have Wii, we have PS3... Now I own a 360. Guess why?
'Cause since 2007, PS3 is disapointing me. I don't know, but I feel it's the begin of the end of Playstation :-(
Now I play on my xbox, and instead of playing DVD's, and having no built-in wi-fi, it gives me a lot of exciting games... I love ps3, but I think PS1 and PS2 were the best gaming consoles ever made... Since Ken left Sony, PS3 began to fall down...
