I enjoyed your views Ben (and Luke). Which games did you test out? My friend is currently playing Ridge Racers (He is not exactly Japenese but his grandparents are and thats where he had been for winter and he bought back a little.....toy). He did let me have a go at it and I really am astounded by the game (although the analog stick could have been more convenient). The load time was about 15 to 20 secs. and it did not have the usual Rally X mode on the loading screen. Also, when you change cars outside the actual racing it takes about 3-4 seconds to load up each car.
Coming back to the graphics - its downright brilliant. I couldnt believe I was holding a lil sleek balck-plastic monster in my hands.

Well before I pop my eyes out....any idea about the Europe release mate? Because over here (I live in the United Arab Emirates, Dubai) everything we get (in gaming) is at the same time of the European release and also the price. So - a simultaneous US and EU release? I hope so...

Also, many retailers are getting their PSP's on feb 24th here but are selling in on March 2nd due to huge pre-ordders to be sorted out....guess ill pass...and wait for april when Jumbo Elect. would have put a sale on it
The US and UK release dates haven't been announced yet, but it's expected to be some time in March.
When I pick up a portable gaming device, I want games optimized for situations when you're mobile. I don't want ports of PS2 games, I want games MADE for mobile. When I pick up the Nintendo DS, I feel like I'm having a different experience than when I'm inside playing on my PC or Console. When I picked up the PSP, I felt like I was playing PS2 games on a small screen, kind of technically impressive, but not really any more fun. From a technical standpoint, the PSP is amazing, definetly a next-generation device. From a gaming standpoint, I felt impressed at first by the PSP, but as the novelty wore off, I was playing the same PS2 games that I'd played in my house, without the graphics and controls.

Yes, I've only played one game, but it's the hardware I was reviewing and the potential it offers, not the games. The PSP vs DS argument has been done to death already, and yes, the DS has loads of potential and is a great machine. But after playing with both extensively it's the PSP that's left a far bigger impression.
Have you tried both machines?
I hope the DS does well, but I don't believe it will "change the way games are played in the future". Sure, games can be played in a different and exciting manner on the DS, but I don't think these innovations will become the norm with all machines. Also, the more I play the DS the more I feel it sufferes critically from lacking analogue control aside from the touch screen.
The PSP, however, offers the first real glimpse of next gen gaming on the move. OK, it is basically a PS2 in your pocket but the GBA is basically only a SNES in your pocket yet it has done tremendously, and has been critically accliamed as well. I don't think the PSP should be slated for lacking innovation. The DS took that route and good on it, but Sony's decision to opt for raw power is none the less creditable, merely different. The PSP is a remarkable machine and I'm sure it will become the next power in handheld gaming. I know as a Nintendo lover (which I class myself as, incidentally) it's tough to hear. But after playing (and owning) both machines that is the conclusion I have come to. To say anything else would be a lie.
whats the point getting one bfore the release dateits best to get them later cuase then bugs can be sorted out and if you buy them straight away that will just suck

The one I received had no bugs that I noticed, and the display was awesome. As you can upgrade the Firmware by USB or Memory Stick Duo, I'm not too worried. It seems like Sony will probably upgrade and update the PSP's frequently when they become readily available. I just didn't want to wait another 2-4 months to get mine!!!! Pick one up and you won't regret it!!!

Of course it's financially more sensible to wait for the European release. but for some folk, like myself, it's nice to import a machien and be ahead of the pack! Firware upgrades are supported anyway so keeping the machine up to date shouldn't be a problem. Of course, you can't account for hardware changes, but the PS2 changed many times over the years. If you were to wait until the machine got to its very best, you'd have had to wait over 4 years!

I am in the same boat however, loving all versions of Nintendo's portables, and then suddenly feeling like I have the seven year itch and I need to touch younger and sleeker things. My DS is only getting used for Yoshi's Universal Gravitation and Urbz, as the games have already bored me (more games Nintendo... geeze... I'm patient - but not that patient!) The PSP lures me every night to at least one more round of golf or maybe I can beat my high score in Lumines, however. I take it everywhere with me and I have even puts episodes of Aqua Teen Hunger Force on there to watch when I don't feel like gaming. In addition, pictures of my sweet kitty also reside on the memory card to show off proudly to anyone who's curious. I have a few MP3's on there also but I really need to buy more Pro Duo cards...
I was skeptical of the PSP at first... but even now I must admit that Nintendo should do more than pretend they are not worried about it. From the rumors I'm sure they are and I'll continue to buy their products as I always have (the geek in me) but I do think that for the first time they are going to have serious competition not only in other markets but on their own turf.
Well I guess it's true, the lead CEO of nintendo is right "Americans will buy any game just as long as the graphics are good." (quote was said on the release of donky kong country for the snes). And undoubtedly the PSP has far more graphical potential than the DS, but the DS is far more unique.

This quote is true, for about the first couple of days, then you realize they're not bringing anything new to the table, just a powerhouse of graphics due to superior nano technology. I think of the PSP like a flashy 3D poster of your favorite movie, and the DS is a Picasso painting, or a vintage DiVincci.
The PSP has online and great graphics, but I have seen all the upcomming titles for both systems, and frankly, (this just might be my inner nintendo fanboy talking) I think the DS will be a very formidable foe to the PSP. The DS has sold twice as much units as the PSP on the first day.
Plus I have been doing research on a company known as the Warp Pipe Team, who are very sure they can bring free internet downloading and play to the DS.
All in all I think that the PSP won't be the death blow to the DS, but more or less it will be more like the "100 years war" with both sides being completely diminished, but they both decide to call a truce. The PSP is England, while the DS is France, meaning that the PSP will win more battles, but the PSP is fighting on nintendos home turf, and the DS will just have more staying power and banish the PSP forces from their land.
there is a New GTA coming out not GTA3 its called GTA liberty city and the PSP is surpose to be 193 for basic unit and 200+ for the value pack

Ok, for you n00bs It will release in march 24 for 250 only the value pack comes soooo For that 250 you get a memory card and alkl the stuff you need and if you get one of the first million psp in US It comes with a spider man 2 DVD for the psp.

I really dont see why people call the nintendo ds so revolutionary. The touch screen is cool, and having two screens is nice, but i dont think it is a revolution by any means. i guess its revolutionary because nintendo made it...just like the virtual boy. im kidding, i love nintendo.
I played metroid hunters and i was dissapointed. I tried, really tried to like that game. but the touch screen controls were frustratingly difficult. and i gave a thorough play through. it felt reminiscent of playing fps' on a laptop with the little touch pad dealy thing...whatever its called.
as for games where people have been saying the ds will rule. they are actually dissapointing as well. when the only good games are direct ports and games like feel the magic and warioware, then your games aren't that good. people bash the psp because of it making direct ports of teh ps2. well look at ds. ridge racer ds, mario party, and some other title taht i cant remember are all direct ports. and of what ive played the touch screen doesn't work too well wiith those titles. the psp on the other hand has a ton of titles coming out. some may be ports, but most are not.
i love nintendo, but the ds just dissapoints me. ive been really excited about psp and ds, and when my friends bashed ds i would defend it. but after playing it and seeing the games i am skeptical. although it does have a lot of potential.
oh, one more thing, someone earlier talked about having a psp with dead pixels and sony wouldn't give your money back. thats one of the catch 22's of importing. you have no warranty

listen up got great news or not for now psp is only purchaseable by spending 249.99 the retail value pack now i know this sucks but you get the spiderman 2 umd video kids so now they say march 24 is the exact day of the release and i got good stuff two trade in any 3 ps2, xbox, gamecube games and get 30% more bucks when you put it right on the psp so thats extra bucks in your bundle for the games you realy dont want so that concludes my stuff im chucking at ya good luck with the money part cus im having trouble with 250 bucks to put down before it comes later guys ill keep ya posted for any more news im out

Whats up with the battery life, i heard that it sux. and i was wondering if you would have to buy a new battery? How long is the Battery life on one charge last? Can you really watch dvd's on that sucker, I mean does it have good enough graphics. last of all, how much will the DVD's be seeling for?

I have 84 MB memory card for space and will run out as soon as i put more clips/pics and vids on it..simply the best hand-held to get...(like a little console with videos that you can carry around..anywhere)

we all know the psp is going to have PDA like functions, word processing, spreadsheets, email, web brosing, what does the DS have! umm ummm pico chat! How do you watch movies on a PSP, you connect your PSP to a USB port and transfer the movies on! wait you dont have a PC what do you do then! Sony are getting into all the downloading market, which will yes! include video downloads for the PSP. what does the DS have! ummm ummmm! an attachment made by a third party company, which you have to add a compact flash card with the movie or music loaded on! again what if you dont have a PC! But the PSP isn't as reliable as the DS for long trips, etc. The battery sucks and it's too fragile. Yes, i agree, the gameplay is better but if you want to play good games just get a ps2 or something. Or you can wait until sony releases a good handheld console like this which is for once actually practical - patience is rewarding.
Oh yeah - i disagree that the psp is for younger kids. In fact its the other way around. I mean mario is not going to exactly attract adults if u know what i mean.
Of course it all depends on how you're going to use it.

Yeah guys true dat... nintendo deserves BETTER.... after b4 ps1 nintendo ruled? my opinion anyway...
and when it comes to handhelds they have got the experience, perhaps sony's 'super' toy (the psp) will not work as we think it will (its perishability).
Anywho im going to hong kong soon to buy a psp, was wondering why everywhere i look at psp-photos the buttons look different, style-wise, on your photos here the buttons are not see-through... any clues?

PSP has better graphics than a ds. I have one, and my friend has a ds.
PSP costs around 200 dollars. ( worth it! ) And the value pack is about 250 dolllars.
The Value pack came with Spiderman 2 the movie, only for PSP, and a 32MB memory stick, earphones, music controller thing, carrying case, demo disc, screen cleaner, and of course, the PSP.
Has anyone played a SPiderman game for PS2? well i have it for PSP, its has almost the exact same graphics, in FULL 3D!!! The PSP has pretty good sound.... but it sounds almost real when u plug head/earphones in.
Games are about 30 - 50 dollars, which is quite a lot for such a small disc. I highly reccomend buying this if you are into gaming. If you have any questions, ask me.

its about an inch long, 5/8 inch wide, and a centemeter thick. you heard me! and it holds like 60 games worth of memory with the 32MB stick. The made a stick with over 1,000MB memory.

Oh, and I bought DYNASTY WARRIORS a couple weeks ago. its not quite the same as on the PS2. you have to secure tiny...tiny...itsy bitsy....areas at a time, and your level ups are a bit different.... as you level up, you musou increases, your atk and hp increase, but your weapon gets better every 3 levels, like before. you dont keep your level ups for the next battle, but your overall stats slowly increase. The graphics are just as good as on the PS2. The officer system is kinda cool. you have "command points" for officers, so that you can choose up to four officers ( if you want to waste your command points as fast as i would eat pizza, that is ) and each officer has a special ability, ( such as speed X 2 for 30 seconds, and life recovery ) and you have to wait about 1 minute to use it again.
