Nokia returns to gaming
New services, handsets
Nokia is returning to the world of gaming in a big way today, announcing a new service that will provide an online music store, a gaming service and four new handsets on which to enjoy such functionality.
The Finnish giant, the world's largest handset maker, says that handset revenues are not enough and that it needs a larger slice of other mobile phone related revenues - notably sales of music, games and the like. Touch-screen functionality will also help Nokia battle the 'cool factor' of Apple's iPhone.
Songs will retail for about one Euro a pop, a similar price to iTunes, with about two million tracks being made available initially. The service, called Ovi (Finnish for 'door'), will offer a range of other service, notably games as well as access to content from providers like Google and Yahoo.
EA, Vivendi, THQ and Capcom have already signed-up to provide games content downloadable via Ovi, with analysts stating this is the company's most significant move since the failed N-Gage initiative. More games news is expected soon, while a backlash from networks could be on the cards with providers likely to feel threatened by service's such as Ovi which could compete with their own content platforms.
More Nokia-gaming as we get it.
