Gizmondo chief Carl Freer has this week admitted that the handheld gizmo won't be returning as early as this May, the scheduling originally hinted when the device's re-emergence was mooted, with late 2008 now likely.

Freer insists that the handheld is still on the way back however, having another stab at the handheld devices market it first attempted to conquer back in 2005 - when poor unit and spiraling costs saw the firm go bankrupt.

The firm are promising to right the wrongs of their last attempt with wider distribution and better marketing. The original contraption was fairly advanced for 2005, boasting GPS, a 0.3 megapixel camera, a and player, text and mixed-media messaging.

Gizmondo's revival is being backed by Plextek, who have acquired the rights to the device, and plan on giving it another shot at the mainstream market - though presumably without lavish shops in central London, or Ferraris...

We'll keep you posted.
