The Virtual Console, a treasure trove of downloadable retrograde hits, will soon be getting classic releases from yet another format of the past: the Commodore 64.

C64 releases will begin hitting the VC later this year, joining hits from Nintendo, Sega, Turbografx and NeoGeo.

Released in 1982, the C64 sold 22 million units - a computer model record which stands to this day. We're promised the "greatest" C64 titles for the Wii, and 4,000 games were originally released.

"The massive impact the Commodore 64 had on video-gaming is still evident today with many gamers remembering the computer and its games with great fondness. By working with of Europe, we are ensuring that future generations of gamers can play some of the best and most popular titles that kick-started the computer games revolution and so keep the C64 legacy in gamers hearts," beamed Commodore Gaming boss Bala Keilman announcing the news.

Karate and Uridium will be the first releases on the VC. Games will cost 500 Wii Points each.
