Word in today has it that up to 30 companies will be investigated over alleged patent infringements linked to short-wavelength LEDs and laser diodes.

Reuters state that the investigation will be carried out by the US International Trade Commission, with among the firms which infringement allegations have been leveled against.

Columbia University Professor Emeritus Gertrude Neumark Rothschild believes she owns a patent on a method for producing wide band-gap semiconductors for LEDs and laser diodes in the blue, and ultraviolet end of the spectrum.

No, we can't really understand it either.

"Dr. Rothschild made a seminal breakthrough in the production of the blue and ultraviolet LEDs that are essential to a wide variety of consumer electronics products today," reads a statement from her attorney.

"She richly deserves both scientific as well as commercial recognition for her work."

Samsung, Pioneer, Sharp, Nokia, LG, and Panasonic are also named in the suit.
