Rockstar address GTA IV 'freezes'
(On the PS3)
With anecdotal evidence from internet forums suggesting that Grand Theft Auto IV might be suffering from intermittent crashes on both launch platforms, Rockstar have initially offered advice for PS3 players.
Forumites have reported crashes and freezes following the game's intro-sequence, and the publisher say that if this happens you should delete your game data and reinstall GTA IV.
Apparently, the problem is more prevalent on the earlier 60GB model console.
How widespread this problem is remains unclear, given the entirely unrepresentative nature of online communities.

there is a cure for d ps3 problem but there isnt for d xbox one n if even there is any its of no use cuz one day or the other ur xbox will get rrod
I hope one day for your sake, ps fanboy, that there is a cure for your illiteracy.
This is why I dont play PC games, whenevr you have to install something (drivers, whatever) you get problems, to bad the PS3 has to download anything to even play it, no thanks will stick with plug and play
My copy for 360 was freezing in the intro, earlier in the intro each time, then BAM! RROD!!! WTF!!! F ME!!!
Cannot believe that these developers release games which cause such damaging effects. regardless of whether you have a 360 or PS3, games should not crash like this - especially for £50! Back to Gran Turismo then......GTA - i bit like getting a date with cameron diaz and then finding out she is a bloke
reinstalling the game data doesnt work
I wouldn't know about these freezes because I got the RROD two days before GTA came out. I hate microsoft. My PS2 survived a car accident and still worked.
so we have to delete our data no matter how far into the game we are?
gta 4 freezing?!? wtf....im glad i didnt buy it yet :)
I have been playing my 360 version for about 4 hours and it has locked up on me 5 times so far. Pretty random but mostly while driving.
Mine (XBOX) freezes during the intro. If I skip over it, it freezes in the first few seconds of gameplay.
Really annoying they would hype a game this much an not have it game ready on release, especially when released months late.
This sucks bigtime! My 360 Elite Freezes at will, after 5 to 15 minutes of playing. Everything stops, it goes offline and it needs a hard reset.
At my friends place it works fine.
* We swapped the Harddisk but on the Elite it generates the same error (running on premium disk).
* We deleted all game data, same error
* We lowered the framerate to 480P, same error.
* We reset to factory default, same error.
It must be a hardware problem on the Elite and not a HD or Config malfunction.
Anyone of you guyzzzz have anything interesting to add to this comment?
Here is what I know.
- Both XBOX 360 and PS3 are experiencing this freeze/crash
- Game freezes up but audio continues. Controls are unresponsive at this point
- Freeze / crash seems to be most common on the 60g PS3
- Deleting the game data / save files and reinstalling the game does NOT fix it
- Reformatting does NOT fix problem
- Changing screen resolution does NOT fix problem.
- Disabling internet does NOT fix problem
- Restoring system default does NOT fix problem
- Exchanging game for new copy = same freeze/crash
- Place of purchase is a non-factor
I have exhausted every option I can think of in regards to this. I actually took my PS3 up to the store at which I bought it. We tried 3 different copies of the game with full reinstall each time, and the problem persists. I received a refund, and bought the game at a different location, only to have the same issue. I spoke with Sony tech support. We tried resetting system to default settings, doing a quick format (back up your save files before trying that one), changing display settings, and then reinstalling the game. All to no avail. I spoke to 2K games support, and they said they were unaware of the problem, but would send me an email when they found out more.
It does not appear to be universal on any particular system. While the game does not work on my 60g PS3, it performs fine on the 60g PS3 in the store I bought it.
That's all I have. If anyone can add something useful to that list above, please do.
so..
i had the gta freeze up my ps3, i turned it off, rebooted and now it won't read any discs....not blu ray, not games, not dvd, not cd...anything.
this happen to anyone else??
i didnt have any problems installing it, it took about 8 mins to install it and its been running smoothly on my 60gb....the only problem is when i quit the game the system resets the control
im sorry you guys i have a 60gig and its great!!!!!
i have 80g ps3 it froze 1 time but it came back to normal after like 45 sec and ive played like 10 hours no problems fingers CROSS
about 9 hours today with my 60gb and I'm rollin. Its not the launch 60gb platform though. Knock on wood. A patch will come for the unfortunate soon enough I hope. I'm guessing within the next 48 hours.
sdfgs your ps3s disk reader is broken, so you cant watch or play anything. you should ring up sony, and you may eventually have to send it in. the same thing happened for me
I've got the 60gb PS3 and it froze during the first car chase misson sequence. Only sound was working. Had to hard reset.

I have the 60 gb ps3 version of the game and it was working fine for the first 4 hours then I tried to play multiplayer and it wouldn't let me. Next I would be driving or walking and the game would just freeze until i would like let off the accelorator and it kept doing it for the rest of my time playing. ROCKSTAR DO SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, the supposed "fix" is nothing but bull. One thing's for sure: Rockstar's lost another customer. To get my business back, they'll have to practically crap diamond-encrusted platinum onto a Blu-Ray Disc and sell it for only $10.
Mine hasn't frozen yet and I have a 60gb. I hope it doesn't happen either.
Hope you guys pull through with your copies.
Just for the record, this isn't just happening on US 60GB Launch consoles. I have a UK 60GB launch and am having exactly the same issues. Rockstar's initial advice isn't working - which was to uninstall the game and reinstall it. I've tried that 7 or 8 times before just giving up. All I do get from uninstalling etc is an extra 5 or 10 minutes out of the game, before freezing up completely.
Let's hope Rockstar address this issue, and fast. For both PS3 and 360 users.
I played GTA IV aprox. 6 hrs with pauseing to go to bathroom and returning to continue play,I have the Xbox 360 20G. this is my 2nd 360 the first had RROD so microsoft replaced it about 10 mos ago.
I have the 60g PS3, bought in Canada at launch, and I cannot get through more than 5 minutes of gameplay.... unacceptable Rockstar....
i burned the 101 gta4 for xbox and never had a problem. i bought the ps3 version and have yet to try it. Burn it if u go it and have no issues.
It is were about neighborhood to our that a real cutting off
my xbox froze during a very long mission, three leaf clover. i was friccin done with it. i was just going to drive back home. maybe 2 minutes drive och so. and it freezes! i had tried that mission like 5-10 times before and when i finally make it. freeze before save. ANNOYING!
My PS3 (60gb) freezes for a couple of seconds every 10-15 seconds during gameplay and cutscenes. I managed to get 10-12 hours of flawless gameplay before this though. It doesn't freeze completely, it just freezes briefly for a second or two, which is extremely annoying.
Okay, so i buy this game thinking its going to be the best game in the world and ive been waiting for years for it, and now it frezzes???? WHAT THE F**K is wrong with you people? We pay money for this sh*t to work and now i cant return my game back and get my money back and keep my 360 running. NO, i have to f**king return my 360?!?!?! THATS BULLSH*T. i rather have my 360 keep working then have that game make me go through all this trouble.
F*CK MICROSOFT FOR BEING STUPID.
ihave the same problem with my gta it keep on frezzing on me evry 2 min but after i frached a serten mission called carente jungle it stoped frezzing so just play for a bit it will stop
I have a 20gb xbox bought in 2006. Hitachi drive. I played for a good 4hrs on the morning of game launch. Next day I got freezes every 5 to 10 minutes. I called R* the next day and was told that they believe the issue is with a ping that goes out to the server even in solo mode. As the servers became over populated, they are unable to respond to the ping and the game locks up. I did an uninstall, as well as the x x rb lb x x drive maintenance, disconnected my xbox from internet, and then reinstalled. It seems to have taken the freeze issue down to once every couple of hrs.
guysi gt gta iv on the 360 mine has only freezed once and i have completed 30% of the game but i cant exit or enter cover anymore seems like rockstar have gt a few problems with this game
Well it's not only oldest 60 gig that are having the problem I have got new PS3 40 gig on december 2008 and I defenitly have the issue, I reinstall the game 2 times, I've changed my copy og the game to the store, I've installed the latest update on my PS3 and guess what, my PS3 still crashing
MY XBOX 360 MADE A RING AROUND GTA IV DISC NOW IT WOULD NOT PLAY... I CALLED MICROSOFT AND THEY DISMISSED IT LIKE I GOT THIS GAME FOR FREE!! DAM NEAR $60 I PAID FOR THIS GAME! THEY NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT ALL THESE ERRORS BEING CAUSE FROM THIS GAME!
SOLVED! I had the freezing issue on my 60 gig PS3

i have a ps3 version of GTA. I have discovered that the game only freezes if you are logged into playstation network before you start the game.
I have an upgraded 40Gb version ( I have now got 240Gb) and I was getting problems. Locked up three times in half an hour. Went back to store and they blamed slight blemeshes on the disk but got a replacement, which did the same thing!
I removed all game data and saved games and tried again to no avail. I thought it may be the heat as the PS3 was very warm so turned off for several hours with the same result.
I then did a quick format of the hard disk after copying saved game profils but not game data as I was not allowed, great another 340Mb download for additional game content purchased at the online store!
The tried a proper format and all appeared okay until another user profile was used.
The other user profile is registered on sony as a youngster but had no parental control set, I changed this to level 11 and all appears okay. The only other thing I may have done is loaded a saved game from the original account on this user profile and currently havwe no issues.
Whats that 'cure'?
r u kidding me rockstar? give me a new ps3 and a new gtaIV that works! u frove my system now fix it
(360) - I had big issues with this game, 'disc error' message. Got a replacement disc - still crashed every 15 minutes or even less. Thought to hell with this deleted all my save and restarted. Played game for 7 hours then it started again. Thought to hell with this and formated my HDD. I believe now I got rid off all the data on my HDD I have played for 10 hours and no crash's thus far. (fingers crossed) It would appear that it is a caching of data from the DVD to the harddrive that is causing the issue. Asif it isn't cashing the right files and it can't find it then causing it to ask you to 'clean the disc'. So my advice - format your HDD and if it still dies after that a little trick I have lernt - exit game goto system --> storage --> press 'y' on your HDD then press x,x,rb,lb,x,x and it should say do you want to continue 'yes' and basically you are clearing the cached files - thus giving you more space to cache GTA and it should work for longer than 15 minutes. - I hope this is of help if not, mehh.
i have a new idea
FOR PC VERSION ! I SOLD IT OUT !!!!
I found one reason for GTAIV to be slow. It's microsoft xlive.
There is a way to fix it. You will need a program from Sysinternals called "Process Explorer". You can donwload it from here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Steps:
1. Start GTAIV
2. See it slow and laggy. You have smth about 1fps but your computer is compatible with minimal requirements at least.
3. Press alt+ctrl+del, to see standart "task manager".
4. Find GTAIV.exe in list and make sure it utilizes 100% of CPU (50% on dual core)
5. Start processexp.exe (Sysinternals Process Explorer)
6. Find process GTAIV.exe and right-click
7. Select "Properties"
8. Open "Threads" tab
9. Select xlive thread which consumes all the CPU time, and click kill
10. Restore your game and enjoy.
