Pachter: Sony "falling behind"
2009 looking difficult for PS3
Stalwart analyst Michael Pachter has been speaking with CVG, revealing his pessimism regarding Sony's PlayStation 3 console.
Pachter says that the console is a distant third, and is concerned the Sony's pricing is literally killing sales.
"Sony has historically priced at its production cost (or above), but it has historically been in first place. This generation, the company is a distant third, and is falling behind at a rapid pace," Pachter offered in a stark warning today.
"Keeping the PS3 price high kills Sony, and gives Microsoft a huge competitive advantage. In my view, every Xbox 360 sold is a lost opportunity for Sony to sell a PS3, and Microsoft has no intention of taking a sabbatical.
"Lowering the price will cost Sony a lot, but it should generate sufficient future profits from game and Blu-ray movie sales and royalties to offset those losses."
Elsewhere, Cowen analyst Doug Creutz has lowered his PS3 outlook for 2009, citing a lack of system-selling games on Sony's format. He believes the console is simply too expensive, with offerings like Home failing to entice purchasers.
