Stalwart analyst has been speaking with CVG, revealing his pessimism regarding Sony's PlayStation 3 console.

Pachter says that the console is a distant third, and is concerned the Sony's pricing is literally killing sales.

"Sony has historically priced at its production cost (or above), but it has historically been in first place. This generation, the company is a distant third, and is falling behind at a rapid pace," Pachter offered in a stark warning today.

"Keeping the price high kills Sony, and gives a huge competitive advantage. In my view, every sold is a lost opportunity for to sell a PS3, and Microsoft has no intention of taking a sabbatical.

"Lowering the price will cost Sony a lot, but it should generate sufficient future profits from game and and royalties to offset those losses."

Elsewhere, Cowen analyst Doug Creutz has lowered his PS3 outlook for 2009, citing a lack of system-selling games on Sony's format. He believes the console is simply too expensive, with offerings like failing to entice purchasers.
