Nintendo were singing a few new statistics from the rooftops this evening, stating that their recent price-cut in the USA to $99 has been responsible for a near doubling of the console's market share.
Apparently Nintendo's sales have quadrupled since the cut thirty-five days ago, and this is responsible for a leap in share to 37% from 19%. This new figure makes the Cube the clear second-runner in North America, according to the Japanese console giant.
"In a tough economy, we've found the sweet spot on pricing, and players are grabbing Nintendo GameCube systems off the shelves at the fastest rate since the console's debut," commented George Harrison, senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications, Nintendo of America. "With an $80 price advantage over other systems and the impending launch of the mega-hit Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, this offer is just too good to resist."
Nintendo are also confident they can maintain this momentum with aggressive marketing and a few new bundling deals in the approach to Christmas. We shall see about this, and if Microsoft respond with a PR offensive of their own. Yawn.
