BBFC attacks PEGI ratings decision
Will support system, still
PEGI may have been favoured in the battle of the UK's game ratings systems, but the BBFC have hit back following the government move - claiming they can do a better job of protecting kids from unsuitable games.
"The BBFC has always supported PEGI and wished it well, but it continues to believe that it satisfies these requirements better than PEGI," says BBFC director David Cooke.
"However, it will cooperate fully in the detailed work needed to give effect to the government's decision. And it must be independent in substance as well as appearance, reaching its decisions and providing information on the basis of its own detailed assessments."
PEGI was of course favoured by UK trade body ELSPA, although it was expected that the government-attached BBFC might eventually win out in this ratings tussle.
While PEGI have won through, the system will be overseen by the British Video Standards Council, who have been given powers to ban games in the UK that don't apply to PEGI guidelines. The VSC is independent and will be free from ELSPA influences.
