Stats monitors Enterbrain, publishers of Japanese magazine Famitsu, have released some fairly hefty data within the last week - analysing the local games market. The numbers aren't good.

Apparently, the Japanese games market is down a hefty 25 percent so far this year - 2008's numbers making much prettier reading.

Between January and June this year sales dropped a massive 28 percent, with software sales dropping a nearly-as-bad 22 percent over the same period. This all translates into the full 25 percent fall.

Of course, this drop can be partly explained by the unusually high number of big name releases which arrived during the first part of 2008 - but no one would have predicted a drop this large still.

Apparently, experts fear the 'Wii effect' is starting to wear off, while the global could also be taking its toll. Thanks Kotaku.
