Severe punishment will be meted out to Chinese firms distributing Mafia-style games via the internet, the Ministry of Culture has confirmed.

The ban on gangland online games was confirmed on Monday in China, the ministry confirming that such titles "undermine morality and Chinese traditional culture."

"These games encourage people to deceive, loot and kill, and glorify gangster life. They are a bad influence on youngsters," adds the ministry, ordering the immediate halt of all such titles.

Three big games were pulled off-line immediately, and more are likely to follow.

There has been little response so far from China's vast gaming community, said to number in excess of 100 million people. Thanks GI.biz.
