Currency drop blamed for 360 Arcade increase in UK
Lewis defends price rise
The price of the Xbox 360 Elite may be falling worldwide, but the Arcade SKU has actually been put up in price in Great Britain, Microsoft blaming the falling value of sterling for the change.
The Arcade pack once cost 129.99 GBP, but it will now cost 159.99 GBP - even though the Elite system has been dropped 199.99 GBP.
The recession has seen the pound lose in the region of 25 percent of its value against the dollar, although with the Arcade SKU priced at 200 USD stateside, it is still comfortably more expensive in the UK even at the reduced exchange rate (159.99 GBP is about 255 USD currently).
"We are making modest increases on the Xbox 360 Arcade console as you can see," European chief Chris Lewis told MCV. "The reality now is partly to offset currency exchange rate fluctuations which have impacted us in local market conditions - particularly in the UK.
"And you've seen other consumer products operate in the same way. But I think even with that we still offer the most affordable console in the marketplace out there."
Lewis still believes that the Arcade pack offers the best value gaming system.
