Citing violations of the company's terms of use, has banned approximately 1 million Live users from the service for using modified consoles to play pirated games.

The sweeping ban follows from Microsoft's pledge to disqualify anyone who uses a modded from accessing Xbox Live. Previous has resulted in swathes of gamers banned, but this is among the largest bans undertaken yet.

Originally reported by InformationWeek, the ban is likely tied to the release of 2 which has seen record-breaking - and huge interest in pirated copies.

With more than 20 million registered users, this constitutes a whopping 5 percent elimination of the total community. The lesson: you gotta pay if you wanna play.
