Pandora's Tomorrow makes film festival debut
In a bold move which will help to change conventions Ubisoft has announced that they will give Splinter Cell 2 its world premiere at an event during this year's famous Sundance independent film-festival. While Ubisoft and its two show partners, Motorola and Xbox can hardly be said to represent the sharp end of independent business they will gain kudos for making their bid to draw attention to the continuing convergence of the gaming and movie-making worlds. The debut will be made in front of an audience of filmmakers, musicians, executives and that great modern catch-all-mean-nothing celebrities.
So this January 18th Splinter Cell: Pandora's Tomorrow will rub shoulders with the stars. "Movies and games have the same goal: to satisfy and mesmerize audiences. Whether or not the final product is a film or a game, a good one inspires strong emotions: tension, fear, elation and frustration. Clancy's Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow, with stunning production values, a compelling story, and incredible action, is a perfect example of the evolution of games. And, as a renowned launching pad for hit films, Sundance is the ideal forum to display the game's many strengths to an audience that appreciates great story lines presented in visual form", read Ubisoft VP Tony Kee from the printout delivered by M$ Marketing Twaddle 2004. Admittedly the first Splinter Cell took gaming into increasingly cinematic territories but does this mean that we can expect to see the launch of the next Final Fantasy game at Cannes? As soon as we know, you will.
