Platform holders eye console MMOs
Details need thrashing out, says boss
Jeff Strain, boss of game developer Undead Labs, has said that Microsoft and Sony both remain committed to releasing subscription-based MMOs on their consoles, despite the challenges of doing so on systems like the PS3 and Xbox 360.
"There are still hurdles to jump with both Sony and Microsoft. But people will make it much easier to jump the hurdle if people can come to the table and say 'we're making a console-only MMO from the ground-up'," the Undead chief told Develop.
"I've been talking to them for years and I think they very much want to see this. There are lots of sticking points to get through. The questions will be how billing works, how the revenue is recognized and who gets what."
Despite games like World of Warcraft dominating on the PC, there has yet to be a major MMO genre success on a console.
