In explaining how he thinks will dominate 2010, product director goes a bit too far and bad mouths Digital, the famed developer behind the franchise.

Greenberg downplayed the significance of Gran Turismo 5, brushing it off as second-rate compared to Microsoft's own exclusives. "Is it launching next year? I've seen years and years of mini-games, but I haven't seen that the game is done," he brashly quipped in an interview with Gamasutra.

It's an uncalled for slam against a franchise that in no way competes with Microsoft's series that Greenberg claims is better. Have we mentioned the 53 million Gran Turismo games that have been sold?

Despite Greenberg's claims, Gran Turismo 5 is indeed revving up for release sometime in 2010.

Note to Tracy: How many of those millions were on the PlayStation 3? (Answer: zero. You're thinking of PS1, PS2 and PSP, and Gran Turismo on the PSP bombed. Badly.)

And why say Halo? Isn't it competing against Forza 3?

  2. Brian Murphy Unregistered 3 months ago

@ Jonah : Who cares? GTA3 was the first installment on the PS2 and that's sold the greatest amount in the franchises history. On top of that. The so-called 'demo' Gran Turismo 5: P, oustold not only Forza 1 and 2, but God of War for the PS2 as well.

Polyphony Digital are reknowned for the sheer quality of their games. And GT has a massive following. To dismiss it so casually is simply foolish, unless, and more likely, Greenburg is simply avoiding any big publicity for it, by acknolwedging that it's going to cause PS3 sales to skyrocket.

if you say the so called demo GT5 out sold the forza 1-2 it just goes to show how meny dum people have the ps3

to pay for a demo ??? its not even finished and you pay ??
dont get me worng GT5 will be good but its taking its time and from what ive seen its not a jump over forza 3
Just bring the dam game out

  4. Brian Murphy Unregistered 3 months ago

@ Dracor - I referred to it as the 'so-called demo', because I challenge you to go out and ifnd me a demo that takes more than 20 hours to complete. In fact, the demo of Gran Turismo 5, is arguably one of the longest of the next-gen games. Point is, it was widely publicized as a 'demo' (even though that's a load of BS), and still sold more than Forza 1-2... it's NOT, I repeat, NOT, a slam on Forza. Merely, an indication of the interest base of GT5P, when the PS3 didn't have as big of an install base as it does now.

Anyone who cares to find out, knows why GT5 has taken as long as it has. Brand new engine. 100% Brand new engine, they had to toss every bit of original code they had from 4. Add in, that each car takes roughly 1 month in man hours to code, and it has more than twice the cars of Forza 3. Yeah, it makes sense they're taking their time.

  5. THE BEST GAME EVER= GT 5 Unregistered 3 months ago

The first Gran Turismo was released for the original PlayStation in 1997 in Japan and 1998 in North America. Since then, there have been six more installments in the series: Gran Turismo 2 (PSone, 1999); Gran Turismo 3 A-spec (PlayStation 2, 2001), Gran Turismo 4 Prologue (PS2, 2004), Gran Turismo 4 (PS2, 2005), and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (PS3, 2008). During its decade on the market, the series has been praised for its stunning visuals, massive car selection, and fetishistic attention to vehicle detail.

wow microsoft execs are douches, always bagging on Playstation. "Ha GT5? na go buy Halo"... that is so ignorant. GT5 is still in development, as a driving simulator it is striving for perfection taking its time... unlike xbox 360. It was the xbox that was rushed in development to avoid competition and therefore suffered from the RROD plague putting profit over quality. If only someone could challenge the 360 execs on national tv and easily make them look like fools.

    I don't understand the whole forza - GT5 'debate'. They're absolutly uncomparible.

Forza is a feel good racing game which is fun to play but unpoloished.

Gran Turismo 5 is a racing sim which has bee chizzled to perfection (At least that's how it's sold).

It's like comparing a american muscle car wth a italian supre car. There's just no comparison. They're different period!

Now stop bashing each other like little children.

One thing is for sure though. MS feels threatend enough by GT5 to start bashing it publicly which is shameless!!!

GT5 is taking so long because they are looking at everything Forza has done and want to copy as much as possible before they release. They are wasteing time on all these cars that only have small changes but are still the same car. Sad thing is all PS3 owners will buy it because they are sheep and that's what they will do. Hmm I own a PS3 I guess I need to own GT5, Metal Gear oh and final fantasy.

  9. Nemesis Unregistered 3 months ago

@Rick: This is exactly the kind of badly written, unsupported and just plain stupid comment I'm talking about.

You do realize that you just stated the 3 best series in their genre's don't you? So, yes if you're a JRPG afisianado you should own FF13 on a xbox or ps3 after it's release offcourse. If you like tactical combat sims and you haven't tryed MGS 4 try it. It is good. As for Gran Turismo 5 it's hard to say what will be allthough it does look good on paper.

Now what you're basicly saying is "I would like to pay full price for somthing of which 50% has been copied from legacy code." Now that doesn't sound very intelligent to me.

I don't think it's undeserved criticism, it's just coming from the wrong person that's all. Look at the delays this game has had, sooner or later they will be announcing it will appear on the PS4. I'm sorry but I fail to see why this game is taking so long, and I'm beginning to ask what the problems are, is it hardware related?

The fact is and Sony will admit it one day, is that the PS3 has bombed in terms of what they wanted. The PS4 will do much better.

Sony and M$ talked about graphics and look the console with the worst graphics, the Wii has won the day.

  11. Seriously? Unregistered 3 months ago

For one, Tracy, comparing the sales of all Gran Turismo products to anything by Microsoft is extremely bad journalism. Look at your facts. GT has been around for a lot longer than the first Xbox, never mind Microsoft's first inhouse console racing sim, Forza 1.

The GT games are excellent, no doubt about it, but every time Polyphony embarks on a GT project, it becomes a giant risk for its owner Sony. Microsoft has released ALL THREE of its Forza Motorsport racers in the time it's been taking PD to make ONE new Gran Turismo. That's a pretty big profit margin made in the vacuum between two GT's.

Besides, I wouldn't even call this bad-mouthing. Everyone knows GT5 has been in development hell for the last 5 years and are CONSTANTLY delaying their release. It's looking like Summer '10 will be its release, but it wouldn't surprise me if that became Fall '10.

One thing is for sure, GT5 will blow away all current racers. Just because it's hype machine is that big. Then again, let's just hope it makes it before the PS4 is done.

    @Seriously?

    Extremely bad journalism? How?

It's interesting that you completely ignore Alan's unprofessional and downright retarded comments and instead choose to focus on how comparing sales figures is a bad thing while it's Alan himself who compares Halo with Gran Turismo, assuming by biggest he means biggest sales, critical acclaim, or most likely, both.

I have a PS3 since its launch, and I have never been left without good games to play, so if a quality game takes a year longer to develop, so be it. As long as it's going to deliver, I have all the time in the world.

Microsoft is obsessed with Sony and everything Sony does. Wouldn't they be better off trying to create some good games instead of selling outdated expansions as full version games? Or perhaps fix their embarrassingly faulty hardware? Or offer some premium online services worthy of charging $50/year for?

    @Jonah Falcon

GT5P sold more than 3 million copies, that's almost 3xForza 3 (the definitive racing sim?) sales

i own a ps3 , if iwanted a xbox i would have brought one, why do people have to bag each others choice of game machine and games? you buy what you want and play what you want , who cares if other people like different consoles and games , a dumb debate on a forum wont change anyones mind , start playing and hush hush now little ones.
