DS key to Nintendo
More chatter from Ninty bosses

An interesting article on Eurogamer.net today reveals the importance of the Nintendo Duel-Screen to the firm, according to comments made by Nintendo officials in the Japanese media. Former top-dog Hiroshi Yamauchi believes this new device lies at the heart of Nintendo's plans for the next two years, and will be crucial to progress: "If we are unsuccessful with the Nintendo DS, we may not go bankrupt, but we will be crushed. The next two years will be a really crucial time for Nintendo," he commented, adding that the hope is that the DS can rejuvenate the stale Japanese gaming market.
Satoru Iwata has also been committed to word waxing lyrical on the current reluctance of Nintendo to enter online gaming - noting the flaws in the current business model (adopted by Xbox Live and PS2 Online), but adding that wireless gaming is also an opportunity the firm is exploring. As has been the company line all along though, Iwata reiterated Nintendo's commitment to games driving technological innovation - rather than vice-versa. An honourable mantra indeed, and I'd urge you to read the piece in full.

Just imagine, for one second, how nice it would be for Nintendo to release a few more press releases, make a few more details official - and put an end to this cycle of conjecture, confusion and media snippets. It all seems rather too vague to me, and can't be doing the fans any favours, who probably just want to know about this new product and the games that will support it.
