John Woo has embraced interactive entertainment further today as it was revealed he has optioned the chanced to create a film based on the Nintendo's videogame hits. Woo is already deeply involved in games, having founded studio Tiger Hill where three new game titles are currently being created utilising the talent available through Woo's Hollywood connections.

Woo will produce Metroid's big-screen debut, and also has the option to direct should he choose to, Brad Foxhoven who will also assist with production has stated on record that the plan is to release a picture by 2006. "Everyone involved is looking at this as a big-budget picture," he stated. "We see a tremendous opportunity to launch a film franchise with as a partner."

The first Metroid film will focus upon the back story behind female lead Samus Aran, and the origins of her struggle against the Metroids, the filmmakers assuming their audience will know little of the gaming series. "We have to assume the mainstream audience is unfamiliar with the property," commented Foxhoven. "As for the rest of the film, we will stay true to the game and have Samus battling the Metroids and Mother Brain in a fight for control of the galaxy."

John Woo added: "We are very fortunate that there is such an extensive amount of material to draw upon for the film due to there being so many iterations of the game over the years." We look forward to further details on this new creation.
