Several rumours of SEGA re-entering the market have been flying around the less well lit parts of the internet recently, and as such we've felt no need to report them. Until now.

It all started with speculation surrounding Sammy's arcade platform 'Atomiswave'. Some thought that Sammy could port this new system to a home console and brand it with their child company's well known SEGA logo.

SEGA threw some nitroglycerin into the mix last week with a press release announcing their E3 offerings - "Learn about SEGA's 2004 line-up and hear BIG news you'd NEVER guess". Some PR person getting overexcited (as they often do - it's their job), probably. The tasty part of this is still to come, however.

Slick electronics weblog Gizmodo, was sent a tip from a reader regarding an encounter with a games veteran -

It may be pure coincidence but I thought I'd let you know something I heard the other night. I was at dinner with a woman who has worked as a headhunter in the game industry for 7 years; "Since before there were women in the industry", she says. It was the first time I'd been around a woman with more video game history/knowledge than myself and it was deeply emasculating. More than a little out of my element not being the alpha male in an electronics discussion, I stooped to the tried and true favorite of drowning her in booze to pump up my self esteem. She mentioned after several glasses of wine that she was going to E3. Naturally, acting like the well educated, adult male that I am, I begged and pleaded with her to let me tag along as her assistant making promises to rub her feet at night and let her call me 'Scoop'. She told me in no uncertain terms that there was no way she would take me.

I had been a little overserved myself so instead of throwing wine in her face like I do with most women who turn down my extravagant requests I entered into an argument about the coming Playstation 3 and 2 announcements. At this point she mentioned to me how new console announcements are pass‚ since there were four big console makers and they were always announcing something new. Sensing a small victory I pounced, "there are only 3 console makers!" Like a mother scolding her son she replied, "no, there's Sony, Nintendo, Sega, and Microsoft." "Sega?", I questioned, "but they're out of the console business?" She stopped what she was saying and looked at me, then mumbled something about how I should forget what she said. Relishing my perceived victory over her supposed video game industry knowledge I let the remark slip thinking it was brought on by the liquor. After seeing your post about a possible Sega I figured I'd drop you a line. I agree with your opinion that a Sega announcement is unlikely, but seeing your post and hearing this woman's drunken remarks is a little interesting.

Make of it what you will. The official line from SEGA is predictable:

"SEGA cannot comment on rumors relating to its exclusive press event on day one of E3," a PR spokesperson read from a script. "SEGA remains excited about its powerful lineup of yet-to-be announced titles." More on this soon.

sega always used to have the powerhouse console, then they got out and MS became the powerhouse king, but if sega enters again is this sammy thing anywhere near what the xbox 2 will be? I doubt it, but if it if all this happens my brain will hurt.

The Atomiswave is actually behind the current generation when it comes to power. All of the GC, Xbox and PS2. So if Sega is launching a new system they are either launching something very different than the Atomiswave or they are going to try something that I don't think has been tried before. Selling old hardware repackaged at a discount and/or catering to a small group of gamers with lots of fighting games and Sega games.

If Sega's glory days were returning, they should definately release their Dreamcast2 (or whatever they decide to call it) a month or two after the release of PS3 and X-box2 because of all the hype. That always seems to be Sony's method. Remember PS2 and how PSP is hitting U.S. stores in March 05' sometime.

I think Sega is sitting back and watching how the market works out with the new 64 bit processors. When they believe they have the money and determination, they'll put out a kick-ass system. ROCK ON SEGA!!!!

I think Sega will make alot of money off its games that it sells to Sony and Nintendo. And when Microsoft,Sony, and Nintendo least suspects it, Sega will come out with a system right after the new generation of ps3,xbox2, and another nintendo console release.

Sega is getting stronger!!! And Sega has always made the best games.

I don,t think this is true at all. This is clearly a phony story.
Sega won,t get in the console market unless they have the funds to do so ,and I don't think they do.

Ah. Good, I wont have to buy a crummy Xbox if I want to play Shenmue III. As long as this is a true story. Sega have really regained all their finanaces, thanks to their new president, and Arcades.

Sega are probably not interested in 64bit procesors, seing as the SH4 in the Dreamcast was a 128bit procesor (I'm pretty sure it was a true 128bit procesor, not just with just a 128bit memory bus or something), which is a bit of a rarity.

I'm pretty sure sega can do it this time. They normaly jump the gun a bit, like they rushed out their Saturn so quick that it caused alot of problems. But I have no idea why the Dreamcast failed so bad. Maybe cause Sega jsut had bad rap by that point, and no one would trust it.

But if they can pull this off, I'll probably buy one before I get a Revoloution. :p

funny i thought sega was baught by some company, ooo if only i could remember the name. Still it is true Sega always did release new revolutions in gaming with all their system
Master System- more powerful than NES
Genesis- 1st with 16-bit and high quality sound
    Game Gear- 1st Color handheld
Sega Saturn- 1st with internet and full time CD gaming
    Dreamcast- first 128-bit

  14. 2nice Unregistered 4 years ago

Also remember that Microsoft worked with SEGA first to develop a new console based on Direct X, but SEGA later cancled and Microsoft went on thier own to make the (Direct) X-box. The only real problem with SEGA was it's management.

Its also doubtful about a next gen console because Sonic the Hedgehog for xbox360 and ps3 has already been anounced. Surely SEGA would have kept sonic to themselves if a new console was the case

  15. 2nice Unregistered 4 years ago

most people dont know that SEGA's Dreamcast actually sold as much as about the gamecube has sold to date

I'm going to set up a site that records all the names of those who want sega to make a new system, what it should look like, and what should it do. Then after gathering data I'm going to send it into sega corp and the news papers so that they will have to hear us sega fans. Will anyone support me in this.

  20. HomerCIDAL Unregistered 3 years ago

I wholeheartedly support anything that would bring Sega back into making home consoles. I'd love nothing more than to see a resurgence of Nintendo and Sega against Microsoft and Sony. With Nintendo taking the road less traveled (lower spec hardware) Sega may see an opportunity to release something similar. A legacy system...for lack of a better term...could be hugely popular among classic gaming enthusiasts and would be relatively inexpensive to manufacture. Let's hope Sega is paying attention to what Nintendo is doing and in some way will follow their lead.

Im not sure about this rumor, Sega did themselves in pritty good with that Dreamcast(despite its somewhat sucsess). Even if it were true, how are they goona compete with Sony and Microsoft, and Nintendo for that matter? Whats next a new 3DO or Atari system?

i wonder if that little coleco thing that plays old genesis games relates to this. also, i wonder if it can be modded essentially into being a nomad.

also, to the dude that mentioned sega's many firsts, Yes- saturn was the first net readys system, but the MASTER SYSTEM was the first system ever with a modem. the modem came out just before the genesis and was made in very limited quantities.

  29. anonymous Unregistered 2 years ago

Oh what you all don't realize is that Sony has shot them self in the foot one to many times. I have also heard a rumor that Microsoft has bought out major game makers (Square-enix is a good example) to move their support from sony to them.

Now what does this have to do with Sega and a new console? Well here you go. I heard that Nintendo is helping Sega this time with building a new console. Does this mean we might find a Mario or a Zelda on a Sega system? I say not likely but you can never really tell.

  30. anonymous Unregistered 2 years ago

Oh and the rumor that links this... is that Microsoft is taking down Sony and either ignoring Nintendo or actually likes how Nintendo does things, (Microsoft=graphics Nintendo=innovation) So in the end Microsoft is leaving Nintendo alone so Nintendo can do their thing... which means spend money on helping Sega develop their new console... Still nothing more than rumors mind you so don't take me seriously... but if these rumors turn out to be true... just remember where you found out first.

I wish since Dreamcast is out of market, a new Sega console, because the today video-game market is very boring. PS3 is very expensive, XBOX 1 an 2 I never liked and Nintendo today consoles are awful(GameCube are ugly, don't a good variery of games, only a lot of Resident Evils and 21st century remake classic games of Nintendo and
Wii, that joystick I don't have any simpathy).

If this rumour is true, I hope Sega make a quality hardware, a affordable price(more than equals) and high quality games we use to.

  47. gamerguy Unregistered 1 year ago

look segas glory days are ova they were once big sure but now not so big for sega to return to consoles it would need a few hit games that people love theyve had none sonic was great, remember i said was great. the new sonic games totally stink if they are gonna return they need to go back to sonics roots and make it 2d with kickass graphics and tons of levels and new abilities if the game takes off. make a 2nd one on there new console and make it exclusive therefore people will buy the new console just for the game. and cmon the new console wont die if they make a bunch of good games. the one that will die in the long run is the nintendo wii. i wanna wii all it :P sega rocks
