Well, the weakness of the dollar may be presenting Sony with all kinds of export headaches, especially with the upcoming PSP handheld debut in mind, however we severely doubt the price point of $500 mooted by Atari's CEO will come into fruition, especially as the Nintendo DS is rumoured to be entering at around the $199 mark. Not that $500 is so high here; the dollar being so weak that such a price equates to little more than £280, as we speak.
Undoubtedly, such a pricing would prove a little too steep for American consumers, and with some aggressive competition with Nintendo on the horizon, Sony will we want to be competing hard from the outset, especially as they hope to make profit from software sales, rather than on the hardware itself. Atari chief Bruno Bonnell fanned the pricing conjecture at a recent conference, stating: "We saw pictures and a nice prototype at E3, but I want to see more. It's nice, like a nice car. But we have no idea if the PSP's pricing is going to be $250, $350 or $500... $500 to start would be my guess."
Of course, Bonnell probably knows little more than the rest of us, and though a UK price of around £250-300 wouldn't be unsurprising, it seems unlikely Sony will risk anything more than that figure in dollars stateside.

P.S. All of Sony consoles had problems with overheating in the first model. Since the psp uses disks and doesn't have a fan, you should wait and see how it works out. ;-)

I'm mr x, actually. Actually, dollar became higher. It might be it'll be just as expencive as it was. That happened once. I would say it'll be about $400, not $500. But still, it's to much, so DS seems to be winning already.
I think that the PSP will be great but i dont think it should be $500. I went to a websight all about that and they said it would be around $370. But that is just an estimate. If i do decide to but the PSP i would buy it as soon as it comes out because it looks like a great system anyone can enjoy and i think it will be a big hit. Now i know you guys think it will cost a lot which im not saying its not but its almost like a ps2 but smaller. I've heard you guys say its like $500 or more. Well you can buy two PS2's for that price. And dont forget the PSP wont have as many or as good of games as the PS2. But if you have a PS2 you can play that at your house and you can play the PSP anywhere else like if you are bored. So i'm really hoping on getting it and i think it will be a great system, eve though its so expensive, it will be worth the money and the wait so i think it will be great to be the first one of any of my friends to own it.

As for the guy who said that this device could have a heating issue, it could be like the MiniDsic player and not generate any heat...Minidisc players load and then stop spinning. If that is the case here as i n load the UMD and then shut of the motor, then i'll be fine.

My guess it prices (aka. $500) will have dropped in half (aka. 250) because the tecnology would have been cheaper

If sony wants to compete with Nintendo, they ought to make their system the same price as the DS.($150)The PSP will sell more because usually everyone nowadays likes Sony way better than Nintendo. Plus the DS has N64 graphics and the PSP has Playstation 2 graphics. Gee, I wonder which one I will choose?

I've been searching the net all over to find out prices and everywhere i look its come up to $195 which is a good price and the value pack would be $244. But thats just all over the net that i've seen. But for the real price we're gonna have to wait and see.

In my country Trinidad & Tobago the dollar is to weak to purchase PSP at $500. $500 is a crazy price. What about $150 - $200 .

What about the price of the games? Sony remember the cheaper they are the consumer is able to purchase more.
PSP Prices:
I live in Japan and the price for a PSP Value pack with everything you need to play costs 26,000 yen which equates to $260 each.
I would say the R.R.P. will be between $260-$300. The problem is it will be so difficult to get one the actual price you pay will be more like $500. Already they sell on e-bay for $600 !!
Most shops where I live are still waiting for their FIRST DELIVERY !!
The games run frpom $25 for Kollon, $36 for Lumines and then $40-$50 for the rest of the games.

The PSP has the same power of the PS2 in the palm of your hand. Add that it plays MP3s and is also a DVD player. Simply put there is nothing ( Nintendo looks like a kids toy in comparision) on the market that even compares. The games,feel,graphics, plays like a PS2. With the headphones i nearly forget it's a handheld.
Add that Sony has some many more ideas for this product. The future looks well....... a lot of fun.

For MP3s when you use the USB cable with Windows XP it writes on your PC: Sony PSP.
Some games like Puyo Puyo Fever you can play 2 people on the same console.
Nintendo DS is like a kid's toy in comparision. It's embarrassing how bad it looks but don't take my word for it. You can see for yourself in a few months.

Since the nintendo DS came out at 150. i think that the PSP should come out at about 150-250. The only reason its so high is because it will come with a charge, case,memory, etc. but i think they should just sell the PSP and the charger and leave the other stuff optional!
