The GameBoy Advance rendition of grows nearer by the day, with Digital Eclipse and North's take on the series due to hit the handheld in late October. According to new previews in US magazines, the new title plays much like the original GTA3 on the PS2, and even returns to the backdrop of Liberty City.

In the game, players assume the role of retiring hoodlum Mike, whose partner Vinnie is killed in a carbombing leaving him as the prime suspect. From here the games plotline is said to commence. As the story is furthered, Mike will be found pounding the streets in search of the true culprits in order to clear his name. The game is played from a 2D top-down perspective, but the GBA's Liberty City is three times bigger than the version as a result.

Flippable vehicles, secret packages and progress stats will all remain intact from the original GTA3. Transparent scenery and a zooming camera should ensure you're in complete control at all times, and the player will also be given the option of fixing the position of the usually zooming camera. A new strafing control will be available in on-foot combat, whilst vehicle handling will be improved with shifting weight.

All in all this game appears to be shaping up very nicely indeed, and will be out a week ahead of San Andreas' jubilant debut on the PS2.
