Namco announced plans last week for their Monolith studio to develop two new role-playing games for the Nintendo DS, which was released in Japan last week and stateside two weeks prior. The games in question are Xenosaga and Baten Kaitos, both popular RPG franchises in Japan already, and will therefore be a major boost to Nintendo's prospects, with the launch of the PSP now just six days away.

Monolith were formed by former Square developers and bring with them existing RPG experience. Of course, this new studio should not be confused with Warner Bros. Interactive's US-based Monolith, the team behind The Matrix Online. We'll keep you posted on all things DS; which seem to be of the overtly positive variety of late, with strong sales being bolstered by Sony's cautious PSP launch which will only see 500,000 made available initially.
