For small games houses with a turnover below $500,000, GarageGames’ Torque engine seems to be cost-effective way of utilising middleware to the benefit of design creativity. To these developers, the engine can be licensed for a mere $100 per Programmer, and what’s more, GarageGames have removed the clause that games must be published through their own site.

"Indie developers still get the Torque for the incredible $100-per-programmer price, but they no longer have to publish their games on the GarageGames site," says Jeff Tunnell, President of GarageGames. He goes on to say, "Now Indies will be able to publish their games on their own site with no royalty requirements from GarageGames."

A startling move indeed. Apparently, the necessity of publishing through GarageGames was removed, after religious developers pointed out in the impropriety of this method. The option is still available, however, to those developers who wish take advantage. Which is nice.

Finally, a new engine solution is still in the works, aimed at larger companies, with a turnover in excess of the £500,000 mark.
