Looking to capitalise on the popularity of the theme park ride, the last film, and the forthcoming sequel ('Dead Man's Chest'), Disney Online have today announced that a brand new MMORPG based on Pirates of the Caribbean is being developed, and will be ready to debut alongside the new flick in summer 2006. This is Disney's second attempt to tap the lucrative and growing MMOG market after Toontown Online.

"This is a great way for game enthusiasts to experience the fun and excitement of playing the role of a pirate while competing against a wide variety of opponents in a great adventure," enthused Disney chairman Dick Cook. Disney Online managing director Ken Goldstein added "We've learned through our experience with Toontown that the market for massively multiplayer online role-playing games can indeed reach beyond traditional gamers."

Gamers will be able to join the game online, for a subscription fee, and will be able to customise their pirate before battling other players for dominance of the high seas - as well as taking on the dead pirates of swashbuckling yesteryear. Disney Online's VR Studio will develop. We'll keep you posted 'me hearties, ne'r ye fear'.
