PSP production declines as UMDs sell big
100,000 movies now shifted
Like that two-part prime time drama your mother loved, this news comes in two tantalising halves. The first word is that Sony is actually reducing unit production of the PSP from eighteen to twelve million, with either a component shortage or poor demand being blamed. This comes despite news several weeks back that Sony was struggling to meet demand, with strong sales all but exhausting stocks in North America and Japan, leaving Sony with an uphill struggle to meet the European and Australasian debut in September. Indeed, speculation has had it that Sony will look to out-source production of the handheld in order to meet demand, something which sits at odds with this reduction in production. We'll keep our noses to the ground for more information.

In more Sony PSP news, the company has confirmed that some 100,000 UMD films have been sold in North America and Japan, quite an impressive figure given initial doubts about the appeal of the propriety, expensive media format. With film distributors announcing more and more movies for UMD, these sales could well skyrocket too - certainly an endorsement of Sony's multimedia ambitions for the new handheld. More soon.
