Sony Plan New EyeToy
'Mini' version mooted
The EyeToy webcam-style peripheral for the PS2 is getting a facelift even as you read this, with the device's original manufacturer Nam Tai Electronics, commissioned to design and build a new model which will apparently be somewhat smaller than the quirky original. The new device will apparently be dubbed the EyeToy Mini. The new camera will 'sit alongside' the forthcoming silver satin-coloured PS2, according to reports, and could well therefore be bundled as part of a limited edition package with the console. The PS2 itself was of course 'miniaturised' with a revision of the hardware late last year.
Whether or not the larger original will continue to be sold remains to be seen, but the EyeToy certainly enjoys considerable success still, with games like 'Groove' and 'Play' still part of many a gamers roster of party titles. The peripheral has also enjoyed support in mini-game form from a number of third-party titles, such as EA's last Harry Potter outing on the PS2. More on the EyeToy Mini soon... we expect a release towards the end of the year.
