Europe gets GPS Gizmondo
New feature live
Whilst not directly related to games at this point, it certainly could be related to games in the future, and therefore we're pleased to report that Tiger Telematics have launched the GPS feature of their Gizmondo handheld across the UK and Europe. The software, which comes on a dedicated SD card, enables the system's existing Global Positioning technology - enabling location mapping, directions, and all manner of goodies. The feature is expected to be used in upcoming games, which will utilise user location as part of the experience. A UK-only version will cost about 99 GBP, whilst a larger Europe-wide option will cost 199 GBP. The handheld unit - with ad sponsorship enabled - costs about 199 GBP at the moment.

A car cradle will launch with the new software, enabling Gizmondo owners to take advantage of this technology when in their cars, whilst the software itself offers both 2D and 3D mapping and voice instructions. A launch at the end of September is planned.
As for how the Gizmondo is fairing generally, that is another question entirely. Billed as a PDA meets games console the system certainly packs a punch in the features department (as functionality like GPS demonstrates), however Gizmondo have thus far failed to capture the mass market attention needed to rival the likes of the Sony PSP, which also boasts functionality beyond just games, alongside the marketing might of Sony. The Gizmondo was recently delayed in North America. The PSP meanwhile launches in Europe on September 1st. We'll keep you posted.
