US developer Bethesda, most famous for their creations of the variety, have announced today the acquisition of the official licence, which was previously held by Activision. The exclusive licence will allow to design and market titles across all-formats. The company is publishing Mad Doc's Star Trek: Legacy already, and this licence will allow them to further extend their interest in this popular franchise. Having publicly and embarrassingly fallen out some year's back, it appeared Viacom and had put their differences behind them, with Acti set to retain the licence until 2009. Not so, it would seem.

"Being able to work with the entire universe of this beloved series is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us," enthused Todd Vaughn, vice president of at Bethesda. "We have some great ideas about where we want to go with this license and having the exclusive right to develop and publish Star Trek games across all platforms ensures that every Star Trek game will be a quality game worthy of its name."

Starfleet creators Quicksilver will create another new game utilising Bethesda's licence, Star Trek: Tactical Command coming out on the and handhelds. Apparently, the new deal will have little impact on the forthcoming Star Trek title. We'll keep you posted on Bethesda's games as we learn more.
