Valve promises 360 games
...and Source engine, too...
Despite Half-Life 2 on the Xbox failing to garner the sales it perhaps deserved, Valve Software have once again affirmed their commitment to Microsoft's cause announcing that a brand new game is in development specifically for the 360 console. Whilst Valve wouldn't be drawn this week on what the game will actually be, they did confirm that it isn't too far off. In fact, we're rather hoping for word at E3.
"Whether developing a traditional FPS, RTS, RPG or delving into new genres, the Xbox 360 is a great platform for expanding Source and our game experiences," beamed Valve boss Gabe Newell on the prospect of Source engine for the Xbox 360, which Valve have also confirmed. The developer suggests the new technology will make it far easier for third-parties to develop for the console, and this launch will pit Valve in direct competition with Epic who's Unreal technology is also being used in 360 titles.
Half-Life and Counter-Strike have in the past made it to the Xbox, but this is the first announcement of a specific 360 title, not to mention the Source engine's platform 'transplant'. Valve's main business is expected to remain firmly interwoven with the Steam content delivery system, which now publishes several third-party games online, that said, this news shows that Valve are keen not overlook the promise of the next-gen consoles either. More soon.
