Blomkamp chats Halo flick
Master Chief, Covenant and more discussed
Neill Blomkamp, recently revealed as the director of the new Halo movie, has been waxing lyrical on the new film - which will be out in summer 2008. Microsoft are heavily backing the cinematic debut of Master Chief, based on the best-selling FPS series, with Peter Jackson also on-board to assist, and an Alex Garland script at the ready.
Speaking to movie site Ain't it Cool news, Blomkamp stated that he preferred looking at the first Halo game from "a conceptual and story perspective", suggesting the film might not follow the plot of the groundbreaking original. He did however assure us that he was definitely a fan of the series, which can hardly be regarded as a surprise, really.
"The film has to have a feeling of reality, and so that means that I want to keep him real as much as I can," the director added, suggesting that we might see a little more of the 'real' Master Chief, in addition to the computer-generated side of things, which will also play a key role. "Master Chief is certainly something that I do not want to change too much at all, there are certain things inside the Halo universe that are sacred and he's the main one," he added.
He did however state that some things would have to change for the sake of the new medium, such as the way our hero moves, and of course how convincing the Covenant are as foes. "From an organic standpoint they have to be believable, they also need to be terrifying, and alien, and the best way to start doing that is to break that human silhouette, although many of them are bipedal anatomically, you can still shift the overall body to be something very alien."
Finally, Bomkamp payed homage to the work to-date of Peter Jackson, as well as computer graphics experts WETA Digital. We'll keep you posted on all of this, and more.
