Sources within publisher have this week told US game site 1UP.com that Lord of the Rings: The White Council has been canned, despite no word on the title forthcoming from the firm. The game was originally unveiled in the summer, but its existence has been known of some time under the Project Gray company working title.

The title was set to put the player in minor roles in the battle for control of Middle-Earth, offering a different perspective on the tale, without the direct involvement of the famous faces we've all become accustomed to. The game was originally billed as "an incredible new experience for fans of The and role playing gamers. With its next generation gameplay and epic new storyline, we think The Lord of the Rings, The White Council will be a huge success."

EA won't comment on the anonymous cancellation rumours, so treat them as that for now, even if it does sound as if EA may very well have thought twice about the appeal of game omitting the story's much-loved characters.

We'll keep you posted as we learn more.
