Chinese gamer dies after seven day session
Lunar festival proves too much for one gamer
More gaming social implications today, after the China Daily reveals the sad death of a Chinese man who spent almost all of the recent seven-day lunar festival gaming, and died at the end of his prolonged session. Reports suggest the unnamed 26 year-old weighed 150kg, and collapsed dead at the end of the week, a time of traditional festivities in China. It is unclear what game(s) the man was playing.
Speaking to the China Daily, teacher Xu Yan blamed festive opening hours for the gaming obsessive's death: "There are only two options. TV or computer. What else can I do in the holiday as all markets, KTV and cafeterias are shut down?" He stated that many people "turned to computer games for entertainment" during the festival as a result of nation's extended holiday period.
Gaming is a booming pastime in China, and given the number of people involved in the hobby occurrences like this are fairly rare, nonetheless a number of such incidents have concerned the authorities sufficiently to begin imposing strict laws related to the time gamers can spend in online worlds, and rehabilitation for addicted players.
As well as deaths put down to neglect, China has seen gamers fighting and even murdering each other over gaming-related feuds, with a number of high-profile lawsuits also surrounding titles which in a few high-profile cases have dangerously dominated the lives of addicted players. More as we get it.
