Unreal Championship will be the killer app of the launch schedule, however. To those of you who've downloaded the UT2003 demo, it is somewhat similar, but does not go as far in terms of radical changes to the series - indeed, it's probably best described as a cross between UT2003 and the original UT. It adopts many of the same weapons as UT2003, with the rocket launcher being noticeably less powerful, and with the sniper-like lightning gun being present. In terms of play style and arena design, however, it's closer to the original UT. It plays tremendously well with a joypad, and the voice communicator adds a great deal. Initially, many of the players trying the demo were reluctant to use the communicator - this has been one of the major headaches MS have experienced - but after a being shot in the face with the lighting gun a couple of times, most players soon lose their reticence.
One interesting point raised was that of modified Xboxes. One journalist asked about persistent rumours that MS would detect and ban users of mod-chipped Xboxes from the Live service. Jay Allard replied with a lengthy discussion about several issues. There were really, he claimed, two matters of importance with this issue. One is the issue of cheating. Allard claimed that chipped Xboxes could be used to cheat, and said that this was the one area where MS were unprepared to take risks. He pointed out that in an online population, if 1% of people cheat, about 90% of the gaming population will be affected, and will have their gaming experience disrupted. The second issue he mentioned was that of intellectual property rights. This essentially boils down to publishers putting pressure on Microsoft to keep a regionalized system. It was interesting to note that Allard did not attempt to justify the regional system from a consumer perspective, but simply said that it was something that publishers were insistent upon (remember MS is also a publisher), and as such he felt that Xbox should respect that.
I had two main concerns about the viability of Xbox Live before this event. One was the voice communication issue. The second was broadband penetration. And I hate to admit it lest I be forever labelled an MS fanboy (and quite frankly most people who level that kind of accusation have no clue what they're talking about), but I have been pretty much won over on both counts. Let me elaborate...

Xbox Live = Great idea. Completely agree with the article; I'm glad MS is trying something revolutionary like this. Hopefully it will change console multiplayer gaming for the better.

idsn will work with xbox live. any connection except for dialup WILL work.

You cannot play Halo on Xbox Live currently, but goto GAMESPY and could play it online right now for free, hopefully they will have downloadable upgrades for halo at least. Xbox Live is better than PS2 network whatever...PS2 is crap with a blue light. wow.

The official retail date for Xbox live is the 14th MArch 2003 but you can get your hands on it at the end of November as Test Drive Subscriber, just go to the Xbox Uk Website, sign up for the newsletter and they will let you know when you can purchase the pack. Also you yearly subscription won't start until March so you get 3 months free.

Of coure you can paly halo on Xbox live or it would not be the giant succes that it already is.
Well you will have to use 128K preferably to connect to Xbox live i have connected my ISDN using the gamespy tunnel application, 10/100 Ethernet card, and a CAT5 cable. I am yet to try Xbox live out. But my experience on most games through the gamespy tunnel at 128K has been impressive :). 64K will be ok for games such as Time Splitters 2 and Unreal Championship though.
Will a 128K broadband connection be good enough for the majority of games, notably Ghost Recon??

Well keep in mind that none of the games except Unreal Championship I have, have been developed for net play. I guess that with the improving of the XBox live service and the quality rather than random Hostings on GameSpy TUnnel will render 64K ISDN perfectly fine for Xbox live.

think x box live is a great idea but i have got 2 questions about it
1. can you run any game of it with 64k?
2.if i can run any games with 64k i have a bt digital acces box which i am running it through. it goes to the pc through usb but has a connector the same as the x box one. will it run through that without stopping the pc going on the internet?
