I eagerly anticipated the arrival of this game for the PS2 because of its multiplayer function that didn’t mean a split screen, and that my boyfriend and myself could actually play a game together without any arguments over the PS2…at last.

Developed by Black Isle Studios of previous Baldur’s Gate fame on the PC. The PS2’s first outing into the fantastical Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Forgotten Realms’ city of Baldurs Gate may, at first, seem limited due to the party consisting of one rather than the usual six, found in its PC incarnations. But don’t be put off, this game is super Gauntlet (for those that remember the 80’s arcade classic) polished to a high gleam and immersed with all the splendour you would expect from Black Isle.
There are three characters to choose from. Vahn the Arcane Archer, known for his supernatural accuracy using a bow and imbuing his arrows with magic, Kromlech the Dwarven Fighter who is tough strong and a must for hand to hand combat and Adrianna, the Elven Sorceress who calls on the raw magic within herself, unleashing it with fearsome effect.
Upon entering the city of Baldur’s Gate you are accosted by a group of thieves and all your money and items taken from you, but your life is spared thanks to the early arrival of the city guards. You make your way to the Elfsong Tavern where a buxom half-elven barmaid called Alyth helps you. Not being too happy about being mugged you set off on a series of quests that lead you into the middle of a war between two thieves guilds vying for control of the cities underworld. Masterful plot twists draw you into a more sinister scenario. Also by completing sub-quests you gain rewards that help you on your way.
Water affects as never before seen on a platform had us jumping in and out of puddles to the detriment of dying just to watch the emulated water physics. The sumptuous lighting affects combined with the highly atmospheric sound and music really immerses you into the game. The backgrounds were superb too, with ice caves and other rich locales that are simply breathtaking.

I bought Dark Alliance believing I would hack and slash my way through 40+ hours of gameplay... So you can imagine my dismay when I finished the game in 8 hours. Although the graphics, sound, and gameplay are spectacular, the game was not long enough to make me want to play it again.
A few tips to people who are interested in purchasing this game: Considering you will finish the game within 8-10 hours, it's more cost efficient to just rent the game. If you don't mind pushing the same button for a couple hours and if you like playing "Dress up" then this is a game for you.
Overall, Dark Alliance could use about 10 or more hours of play, but if you are looking for a brief and enjoyable game... Dark Alliance is a great choice.

It's a great game for 2 player's-Me and my fried had a ball playing this game.
Not enough options for characters. I have played Dungeons and Dragons with friends and you totally customize your person or character how you want them to look act and fight. I agree it seems short. Fighting, I love a hack and slash game. I just do. I have rented it once. After playing it a while it does get boring and I can play games for 5 hours straight. Ah well, rent it, if you like it, buy it. It is still fun though.

I got this game for my b-day. Me and my freind played it that night and the next morning, and we were done with it the next day. Its a great game, its just too short. I started a single player game and beat it in 2 hours. Ive beaten it 6 times, and its still somewhat fun. I just think it needs to be a lot longer. Other than that, its fun. I would like to say i am glad i got it on sale, cuz i dont think i would have been satisfied knowing my parents paid 50 bucks for a game that took 7 hours to beat.
I've bought this game and have been playing it by my lonely little self (no one in my family will play it with me, the meanies :-(), and I have to say it's brilliant!
I wouldn't know about the short gameplay overall - I haven't finished it yet - but I feel like it's been going fast.
I say that you won't necessarily beat the game in 8-10 hours - some people will take their time more than others, or be completely rubbish and determined (like me! :-P), so go on, buy it, it's great great great fun if you love hack-and-slash. :-)

I couldnt wait for this game to come out. When it finally did i was very eager to play. when i got and played i was very pleased. I liked how the game had mulitplayer with out split screens:-p. Even though the game is a bit short it always makes u want to keep playing. Its great if ut looking for a fun, short, and exciting game to play. On a rating from 1-10 id give it an 8.5.
This game is one of the best games I have ever played.The graphics are genious,the weapens you can collect and buy are unlimited.From the rusty dagger to the ring of protection.I pray that one day you will make the return of boulders gate.

What the hell, it took you 16.5 hours to complete! It took me just 8 including the unlocking of expert mode! Man your slow. Bouldres gate rule, even though it is a short game. I advise evryone to buy the second game as it is even better than the first!:-D
