I've been playing this and I do share your thoughts about the gameplay... But I dig the story too..

yeah, I agree that the character selection thingy is annoying, since, like any other time a great story is packed into a tight space, many details are left out at first. But, if you pay attention you'll get the hang of it soon enough.

I disagree that the various time-levels are 'terribly linear and uninspired'-not that the levels aren't linear (they are). To pose a thought invoking question; Since when is it necessary or even better that all games be open-ended and explorable? Honestly, after overtly open games like fallout2 and even newer adventures like W.O.W., it's almost refreshing to play through a more linear game. It seems to allow more focus for the player to truly soak in the story behind the gameplay. I personally found the time-based levels to be pretty cool looking and each carried its own unique flair without disrupting continuity. But, maybe those things are merely a positive spin on the properties of the game, as opposed to the negative comments of the review.

I definitely agree that I would've liked better AI in enemies, at least for replay value at higher difficulties. But, I would have much rather prefered a little more enemy variety, as I got a little bored with killing some of the same ol' nasties after a while. Seems like, even the nasties that looked a little different in later levels still moved similarly or required the same skill level and methods to dispatch them. I'd have to say that variety of characters, weapons, and special abilities cannot ever make up for monotony of gameplay due to repetative enemies - might as well go play Diablo2 for a few hours, only without picking up drops!

And yes, squad AI sucks in this one.

BOTTOM LINE: play it once, it has a cool story, and lots of cool gore and creepy blood and junk. Absolutely no replay value even with unlockable character cards and unlockable cheats. With no online play or competition, in addition to "core points of originality" being poorly "implemented" , this game definitely has fallen behind in the market.
