Well, when I first played Mario Party, I thought like you but after meeting the "right people" to play it with, this game is a blast! It is like a monopoly game. It plays slow but that's ok because there's never any rush playing it. You're with your friends having a good time and there's no reason. (All the aforementionned friends are 30yo and plus btw). That said, I agree that there is too much of a luck factor in this game. The only game that is a bigger blast (with these same friends) is Mario Kart.
i hate mario
Wasn't this game released over 6 months ago? That's when I remember getting it. I agree with Franck though. My first impressions of the game weren't exactly great. I considered returning it but didn't. Then a few days later some friends were over and we got drunk and after a few rounds of Timesplitters I put MP4 on "for a laugh" and suddenly there was a whole new dimension to the game. Once you get into it this game is great and 6 months on I'm still playing it when friends are over (we don't even have to be drunk now). 50% is a bit too low in my opinion, it's more of a 75-80% game.
I played the multiplayer at a friends, having never played a previous version and I quite enjoyed it. However, I would say that the boardgame element is too slow. There are often pointlessly long movie sequences where you might see a genie come out of a bottle or something. It damages the flow quite badly.
But, 50% is harsh, I'm with Chris - 75-80%.
