In November of last year, Soul Reaver 2 was released on the PlayStation 2. The sequel to Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, and the third game in the Legacy of Kain franchise after Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, is brought to you by Interactive and published by wholly owned subsidiary of Eidos; Crystal Dynamics.

Nosgoth, seemingly forever tormented by the scourge of vampires, once again sets the scene for Raziel. Picking up where Soul Reaver left having just plunged through the Chronoplast time portal you must delve into the mysteries of ancient races, exposing the reasons behind the corruption of the Pillars and the vampire genocide. Raziel, bent on his search for Kain, switches between the material plane and the spectral plane plunging himself into various time frames of Nosgoth.

Retaining all the abilities he gained in his previous adventure such as swimming, scaling walls and soul devouring, Raziel wields the Soul Reaver right from the offset. By solving in-depth puzzles you are able to activate elemental forges holding the power of Dark, Spirit, Light, Fire, Earth and Water allowing you to dip the Soul Reaver into their stream and gain new abilities that you will need to reach every area in the game. New locations such as swamps, forests and cities provide rich scenery for Raziel to explore. New vampire types and a much greater variety of human NPCs and enemies including wraiths and spectral scavengers, Sarafan warrior-priests, fanatical vampire hunters, vampires, extra-dimensional demons, vampire worshiping cultists and undead warriors greet Raziel (in unfriendly fashion, naturally) on his adventure.

The deep storyline features overlapping quests in a non-linear game world that requires exploration and puzzle solving, in-depth puzzles with richer puzzle mechanics – more cerebral puzzles requiring exploration and attention to surroundings. Raziel can gain more than thirty new abilities throughout the game. The combat system has been enhanced with additional weapons and enemies that are vulnerable to different types of attack, keeping you on your toes. A compass helps Raziel from getting lost (although I never used this) and negotiating his way through the game world.

The characters are highly detailed with high-resolution textures and greater colour depth. The architectural details have more texture, variety and richness with more varied locations. The special effects have been improved from Soul Reaver with a constant 60 fps ensuring fluidity. Loading time has been cut completely with continuous data-streaming technology. Which is nice.
