Well, isn't this a timely release; with the hostilities (or so we are told) finished in Iraq, Gotham Games have blessed us with Conflict Desert Storm 2, the sequel to their popular squad based shooter title. Whilst some will frown upon their timing of this release, designed obviously to cash in upon the war, it has been done before. Who remembers Desert Strike, that classic isometric helicopter shooter from EA Games? War, it would seem, is big business for game developers too...
The original CDS did have a few problems, such as confusing levels and slightly fuzzy graphics, so have we ironed out all of these problems for the sequel? Let's hope so.
Firstly, how does the CDS play? Well, rather well it has to be said. You take control of either a squad from Delta Force or the obviously superior SAS (only kidding guys), the only real difference between the two is the colour of the uniform or the accent orders are screamed in, apart from which they both play identically. The most important issue in a game such as this is control, how do you control your squad using the slightly limiting PS2 controller? Obviously there are multiple button presses to execute a single order (hold L1 and press X, etc.) and on the whole the system works very well, after a few minutes I had squad members following me, taking cover and setting up sniper positions. The only real problems stem from the slightly stiff AI. The enemy soldiers are rather dense, often running straight into the stream of hot lead spewing forth from your SA-80; just as the ten before him did. Your squad can often have dense moments also, occasionally running into walls or hiding behind some nice explosive barrels (might have been my fault that one). The slightly fallible AI becomes even more of a factor when coupled with the limited save functions. It is rather annoying to have spent fifteen minutes getting your troops into position; only for them all to be slaughtered, forcing you to start again as you forgot to save. Although these incidents tend to annoy you rather than ruin the experience, they are worth noting, especially if you were thinking of this game and have a very short temper. However, on the whole the squad does function well and you'll be shooting the enemy soldiers with professional ease, or if you're are like me, you'll simply mow them down in your Land Rover. That's great fun believe me.
The graphics, whilst improved since the original, are still not too impressive. They are standard at best, with collapsed buildings and sand everywhere. The fuzziness does tend to make recon difficult, forcing you to get in close to see if that is an enemy soldier or merely a nice potted plant, as you can imagine, sniping with anything other than a sniper rifle, is impossible. I would have liked to place some nice long-range shots with my assault rifle, but at a distance its potluck if you hit anything. There are some nice touches, such as burning wrecks and the occasional fly past by F-16s, but on the whole there is nothing that stands out as incredible. These are graphics that just get the job done, which is a bit of a shame as I would of like to have seen them slightly sharper, allowing me to get the job done well.
The general atmosphere of CDS2 is still rather good, even given the slightly under par graphics; the sounds of distant explosions and vicious sandstorms are very poignant and made me feel as if I was in the middle of a Chris Ryan novel. The general shouts of the Iraqi forces do bring a chill to your spine when you are down to your last man and cowering in a bunker, it's something that is painfully omitted from most games of this type.
The main problem the first title suffered with was a slightly confusing level lay out. You never quite knew where you should go and often ended up running in circles looking for your elusive objective. Thankfully this problem has been banished from the sequel as I found myself running from building to building moving my troops around for the best tactical strike possible, something I found difficult in the original, as I often didn't know which building to strike! There will be times when you get lost though, but I felt that they added to the experience, giving a sudden jolt of fear as you realise you are in the wrong place at the worst possible time...
So all in all CDS2 is an enjoyable tactical shooter, with just a few minor faults. It is atmospheric and just difficult enough, despite the AI problems, to warrant several attempts at a mission. If you want some squad based action for your PS2, you can't go far wrong with this.

i love the first game, i beat it like 10 times, i just wish they could make it so that it was different each time. After a couple times, you tend to remember where all the action goes down, and remember places to avoid. I wish they could make it so that the enemy does different things, like come out of building 3 instead of building 1. So after you beat it, its time to sell the game, cause if you play it again, its the same thing over and over again

PS2 Conflict DS 1, Counter Attack Level, How the hell do you go into the castle? I have only seen 2 possibilities, the main gate and the metal gate. I blew the metal gate (possible sewage drain?) But it wont let me enter that way. Any ideas???

sounds like youre in the right spot. the gate you have to c4 will have a mi-24 hind helicopter that will pop up as soon as you reach the gate. there will also be 2 shoulder fired anti- aircraft missiles on the side of the gate door. once the heli is shot down,blow the gate and walk in. let me know if you need more help.
Have you heard of any graphics glitches on CDS2? I have encountered one. It happens sometimes when a 2-player mission is loading. It begins with a verticle red line appearing on the left of the screen. Then, once the mission is started, both soldiers of one team are olive drab, or bluish in color. Their facial features are non-existant, almost as if they were green plastic army men. Its odd.
I've also experienced random times when running inside a building, that suddenly my soldier is there, but the background has turned completely to sky colors, with a few building tops floating here and there.
Do you think my game disc is defective, or does this sound like a programming glitch in the game?

to start with: the enemy a.i. is really bad but stll they can see you when you are crawlig in a dark pit with camouflage when they are 600 m away from you It can be fun for a cuplle of hours,but not all the missions are fun i liked the four firsr missions, i treally enyojed the besieged mission where you and your team must advance to a bunker in an open field and then you get overwelmd by enemy armour and infantry units.But it is a very pro american game and i dont like "pro something" games .If you like team based squad games then this wont be so bad.alazanché !

i've got cds2 and i agree with you about the saving. i was in the middle of the mission where you had to destroy the enemys coms systms and i,d just blown up the antennes and the coms control systm to the whole ofnortherh iraq, so i started to move on to my next objective and got wiped out. i think that the game could have done with a saveing checkpoint systm, a bit like the one used in splinter cell: pandora tommorow.on the other hand i don't agree with you about the graphics. i don't think that they are fuzzy at all and that they're just fine how they are.
