No freaking co-operative play. This can only be yet another example of how this game is unfinished; hurried out the door by a publisher so eager to get Hiddy Dan to market that he hasn't had time to put his tie on straight or do up his laces. I played the original with my mates over the LAN and it was some of the finest gaming fun I have ever experienced. This time round there's no option but to battle the Nazi scum in the company of the computer and its cornucopia of glitches and faults. Of course we are promised the return of this feature in an expansion pack and if I didn't have to review this game then I would have waited until said pack made an appearance.

Since the first Hidden and Dangerous crawled up to the frontline, almost fatally wounded yet possessing a flair for combat that would see it over the top, its presentation of WW2 battles in full 3D-o-vision has been copied many times over. Yet back in 1999 H&D lived in such a rarefied world that many people were able to forgive its horrendous number of bugs, its scrappy ordering system and predilection to crashing. Fast forward to 2003 and there's a near glut of WW2 based games, the vast majority of which come in three-dimensional flavours. On top of that, the number of tactical shooters available are greater in number than bullets in a Sten gun magazine. So, on its return to the line, is the H&D series now a hardened veteran or does it continue to cower behind the nearest available cover? If it's the former we will have a new WW2 king. If it's the latter then H&D 2 is headed for an early grave since at this point in the campaign the battlefield is all torn up and there ain't even a branch left to hide behind.

Well things get off to a worse start then the Omaha beach landings. The installer is cack, asking me to reinsert the very CDs that I just removed so as to put in the next disk. An inauspicious start. Once this minor hurdle was bypassed I was treated to one of the more inept looking intro movies I have witnessed in the last few months. After the professionalism of to have to watch ugly models that look like they have been animated by Tony Hart's ghost was no fun at all. And as this intro uses the in-game engine a fog of creeping depression began to swirl around my ankles. Already feeling like I've taken part in a five mile march I sucked in my chest and headed off in the direction of the tutorial. A familiar training ground roughly rendered in a stlyee was the reward for my effort. Taking control of one of the identical looking soldiers I hacked my way through a tedious trial of my patience. The controls - Arrrgh! Nein! Nein! Aieeee! Checking to make sure my clothes were still on and there was no melted sphere shape around me I struggled to comprehend why on earth a developer would release a title in 2003 where the default movement keys were the cursor keys. For all the myriad of faults that I was to come across while reviewing this title this struck me the hardest. A good case can be made against the publishers for releasing a game so plainly unready for anything other than the market but the default key choices show a developer seriously out of touch with any progress that games have made since 1999. Once the keys were remapped problems remained. Even though I am willing to attribute some blame to the few pints I'd had previously, any game which makes such a production out of getting a man to climb a ladder is in need of some serious re-working.

if Ferrago is "Intelligent Gaming Opinion" why did you let a total halfwit review H&D2?

While it's true there are many bugs in H&D2, especially in terms of squad AI, once you gain a bit of experience with the game and understand what works and what doesn't, there is a lot of enjoyment to be had.

The level design is stunning. Often you can see the entire level in front of you from the very start of the mission, and the freedom and variety of gamestyles that this approach can accommodate hasn't been seen in any game that I've seen. This is the kind of nonlinear style I was expecting to see in the so called "next generation" FPS's like Far Cry and Half Life2.

It's true that the squad commands are a little too limited, you usually have to take control of the other players one at a time in sensitive areas, and the game seems to have been rushed by the publisher for Christmas. But if you persevere this game has a lot of replay value, and the cut scenes are some of the best I've seen.

I enjoyed it much more than Call Of Duty, and the other "on rails" FPS's that have been released recently (Halo, XIII...)

The reviewer failed to mention H&D2 has a full Multi Player mode, which is 50% of the game, this proves the review is complete BOLLOX and totaly misleading.

  8. Sam 5 years ago Staff

If I was the apologising sort then I would be saying sorry for upsetting so many people with this review. As I am not, and as I stand beside what I said, all I can do is try to address some of the points raised.

The installation and key mappings were not the biggest problems I encountered but were indicative of sloppy work by the programmers. The animation is horribly crude, just a glimpse at the intro movie will confirm that the movements of the models throughout the game is rough and unrealistic. The removal of co-op to be replaced with easier to implement deathmatch modes again shows that the programmers were faced with a task that they were not up to.

If only this game was in the same league as Operation Flashpoint. While that game was not perfect it was a supremely adept military tactical simulator. The combat was in the game not with the engine, controls, design and graphics. CoD and MOHAA, while being totally different games, present the player with an enjoyable gaming experience. H&D2 may present the player with many ways of completing a level but for me the joy in playing through those levels was next to non-existent. And please, to say that CoD looks worse then H&D2 shows a level of bias which supersedes rational judgement. As do statements that this game is free of bugs.

Another six months or so of development, along with a total re-working of the animations, and H&D2 could well have become a classic. As it stands I can see history regarding this as yet another example of Illusions Software’s design abilities far out-stripping their programming know-how.

Oh, and thank you for your good graces crowell00.

  9. Eep Unregistered 5 years ago

"And please, to say that CoD looks worse then H&D2 shows a level of bias which supersedes rational judgement."

rational judgement! LOL, maybe you should have applied that to your "review"

if you honestly think the quality of the models and animations in COD are "superior" you really do need help, or glasses, or both.

Aside from completely ignoring the other multiplayer modes you failed to mention so many of the games features I would be surprised if you ever gave the game enough time to it justice at all.

if anything is biased, it's that drivel you posted as a review.

  10. Fugue Unregistered 5 years ago

"The removal of co-op to be replaced with easier to implement deathmatch modes again shows that the programmers were faced with a task that they were not up to."

maybe you should have done some research, co-op was left out due to time constraints, if you knew a little more about the games development you would be less likely to assume they're not capable.

"The animation is horribly crude, just a glimpse at the intro movie will confirm that the movements of the models throughout the game is rough and unrealistic."

using motion capture and ragdoll physics is unrealistic? Ok, which game is better/more realistic animations?

"If only this game was in the same league as Operation Flashpoint. While that game was not perfect it was a supremely adept military tactical simulator."

as is H&D2, it's just they have a very different approach, OFP had large sqauds, large maps, large battles, H&D2 is on a smaller scale, more about stealth, that's how it's meant to be played.....

"The combat was in the game not with the engine, controls, design and graphics. "

that makes no sense, if you can't play the game how it was meant to be played it's not the game/engine/controls fault, blaming the graphics is a new one......

"H&D2 may present the player with many ways of completing a level but for me the joy in playing through those levels was next to non-existent. "

yet H&D has many similarities...... and that game you say "some of the finest gaming fun I have ever experienced"

or is this just anger at no co-op? Seems your judgement was clouded from the start.

"And please, to say that CoD looks worse then H&D2 shows a level of bias which supersedes rational judgement."

I have both, H&D2 looks better in almost every respect than COD..... it's not bias, it's obvious... unless you're biased.

"Another six months or so of development, along with a total re-working of the animations, and H&D2 could well have become a classic. As it stands I can see history regarding this as yet another example of Illusions Software’s design abilities far out-stripping their programming know-how."

I really would like to know what you want done with the animations.....

"CoD and MOHAA, while being totally different games, present the player with an enjoyable gaming experience. "

    say no more ........

it's obvious you were determined not to like the game as it is missing co-op, but no co-op doesn't = bad game. It maybe you're opinion but it doesn't seem based on having spent any real amount of time playing on or offline, cheating to skip levels is a good example......

  11. Sam 5 years ago Staff

Well it seems like I've really stirred up a hornet's nest. Even if I was the only reviewer who didn’t rate this game highly I would stand by my review. The gameplay is flawed here due to erratic AI, dodgy controls and too many bugs. The immersion is flawed because the engine is tired and the animations make your men look like they are carrying around a full load, and not in their backpacks.

If you can enjoy this game in the state it is then good on you, I wish I could have too as this was a game I had been looking forward to for years. As I said in the review, the first time round IS was cut some slack because the gameplay underneath was so fresh and exciting that the faults could be overlooked. Just. Four years later and the gameplay is not so fresh and the flaws and faults are of the same sort as before, making them inexcusable in the product of a professional games developer.

  12. Fugue Unregistered 5 years ago

"Sam said "the programmers were faced with a task that they were not up to". This surely includes time constraints.

sorry no, if you honestly think his comment has more than one context then fair enough, I think it's obvious where he was coming from.

I've played both COD & H&D2, both are equally good, at what they do, one an adrenaline rush of cinematic set pieces, the other a slow, tactical squad game. Trying to play one as you play the other is just ridiculous.

I freely admit to being biased, but I can also be objective, the comments about models and animations clearly show the reviewer isn't, not forgetting the PS2 graphics quip. COD is very good, but not my cup of tea, doesn't mean it's a stinker.

A "bad", but well written review doesn't bother me, it's just the ones that make no effort to understand what the game is trying achieve that bother me, and this is a good example. The opening sentence sums it up.

"There is no excuse for being incapable of spelling and using grammar correctly."

there is if English isn't your first language........

Vortaplex ---> one thing you have frogotten is how bad and unjustified reviews of games infuence the development and publishing of titles of certain game types. If you've got a bunch of reviewers that cannot go beyond the level of CoD or MoH and they shall rate games such as HD2 like the guy here, people will not buy the game, they'll never learn how much this review is a crap. What's more: publishers will try to skip projects like that (of more complicated games, with more ambitious aims, those that make you think a little etc.) if people who like such games won't manifest somhow, that they want to see more titles like that.
That's why a defense by players who like the game is important - so JUST PLAYING when you really like the game IS NOT ENOUGH, belive me.
Why not to show that you disagree with the opinion of others, if you feel like it? The reviewer had his chance - now let the people comment on it.
Insults are other story - they are unnecessary, they come from emotions, narrow-mindness etc. But hey, isn't it just the same place as from where some parts of this review came form...

PS. Some time ago there was a simillar situation with the game Gothic. At the beginning the reviewers wrote a lot of crap like the graphics was outdated, the controls were bad etc. They never saw the magic behind this game. But fortunatley the large community responded properly around the world and now we can enjoy Gothic 2 and are awaiting the third part...

Hi, i know i'm late to the party, but i had to leave a message to you, although you seemed to have opinions of disliking the game before you played it, and the fact you cheated to finish it, i applaud you for standing by what you wrote, most would change it to get people on their side or something.

I do agree on some points though, there are some bugs i encountered, while not show stopped do detract from the game playing experience.

Also, having never played CoD (but i hear it's similar to MoH:AA etc), i can't really comment on it, but comparing 2 completely different styles of games to each other isn't proper to be honest. Don't get me wrong i love MoH:AA just as much, and am not restricted to just the 1 genre, i love gaming of all kinds.

Anyway i'm gonna be quiet now as i'm sure your sick of this crap, but it's good to be different, remember that.

While many of your complaints are valid, many of seem like plan old nitpicking to me. Were you in a bad mood at the time of reviewing the game?

    * I never experienced the install problem you descibed - perhaps your CD rom drive had a few pints before the install as well?

    * I've never bought a game where I haven't had to completely remap the default key bindings. Also - I happen to prefer the cursor keys to the w,s,a,d keys

    * Your hatred of the animations in the game is perplexing - you've got to be the only human on earth that thinks they are that (or at all) horrible.

    * Comparing it to Flashpoint/MOHAA/COD is not valid. Flashpoint is in a class (or genre) of it's own, and the other two are just shooters, minus the tactical part.

    * The fact that you had 'previouly had a few pints' before doing the review makes me question how seriouly you take your reviews.

Now the thing that I totally agree with you are the lack of coop, and the horrendous AI.

Given the act that the AI is really bad, not having coop is an even larger detractor from the game. WIth coop, at least human could team up and make up for the horrible friendly AI.

The game is a flaky and crashes on occasions. The worst part is that after installation oh H&D2 each and every time I put the CD in, it starts the installation program and attempts to install the entire game again. I have a fairly high end spec machine P4 3.0 512 ddram etc. Also the machine gun fire is confined to the sound of one shot. So when firing the sten gun you hear "bang" and then silence the bullets come out ...but no noise. The review was pretty much spot on but it's still a fun game.

  41. Sam 5 years ago Staff

Pach 1.03 has recently been released. Weighing in at a near unprecendented 66 megs and including no new maps does this not indicate a broken piece of software? Obviously some people have enjoyed H&D2 but that does not mean it isn't a seriously flawed game.

Hell, dunno wtf do u guys play, but... Well, i didn't play H&D1 in the first place, so I didn't even know what this H&D2 was about, until a friend showed me.

It is without a single doubt, the best game around based in WW2. Period. CoD is repetitive and boring, it barely has an AI, it's all scipted. Besides, I's OBVIOUS that H&D2 has much better graphics & art.

No, I'm not biased. I just played the games and that's what I felt. MOHAA and COD aren't much more than quake-style shooters, in a different time. H&D2, on the other hand, opens up a lot of possibilities. And the expansion should complement it.

Oh, using cheats to finish a game is... kinda low... lamme, I would say. Especially for a review. Sorry, but it's true. I finished the game without cheats, so why couldn't you too?
The AI wasn't perfect, but it was definitly better, or at least different than what u saw on CoD or MOHAA.
Don't like the squad-based action? Try to do the mission alone, then... it's not impossible, I tell you... ;)

Overall, great game, had loads of fun, the (very) few bugs I saw didn't even bother me at all. Didn't crash, didn't freeze, all great fun-packed action.
    I'd give it a 95% ^^

Like you say there is a great game trying to get out and I still think you compare this game way too much with first person shooters, you have to face it isn't. MOHAA is a great game (First person shooter) but compare to this game, even with it's flaws it's not anyway near as fun.

Sure they graphics aren't DOOM3 like, but this game is more on realismn, and to be honest it does a awesome job - The only game that I can think has a certain amount of resemblence is Operation Flashpoint

  51. steo Unregistered 4 years ago

A disguise full of holes and covered in blood isn't much use, you will have to force the guy to surrender to get his uniform, the manual has tips on doing this though shooting the gun out of his hands seems to be the best way. Just another great innovation from the H&D2 team...
