These slick production values are also evident in the technical areas. Visually the game is quite spectacular, with nicely detailed environments capable of displaying a lot of action on screen. When clips of the films are used to introduce a level they blend neatly into the in game engine. And as for the sound, well as you can imagine having a soundtrack based on the original film score is very satisfying. Marry that with voice acting done by the original cast of the film to complete the package.
The level design is equally polished. Though they have taken some liberties with the story they aren't egregious and serve only to enhance the game experience. Many of the battles in the Lord of the Rings are of course quite large. Thanks to the technical proficiencies mentioned above, and some canny design, they have successfully managed to create a sense of scale. The large siege battles have impressive backdrops to gaze upon. You'll fight alongside a number of friendly units and though most of the enemy units will attack you there is enough happening on screen the whole time that it never feels like you are the only one involved in the defence or plucky last stand. Lots of smaller details, like shouts of hold the line and seeing your arrows sticking out of enemy shields help round out the whole experience.
The best way to play through the game must be the new co-op mode. Tragically missing from the last games it has finally been included, and a great inclusion it is. When playing with a friend you'll undoubtedly end up in a competition akin to that of Legolas and Gimli as you try to get the most kills. It can also be a little clearer to spot your character in this mode thanks to a small arrow that indicates player one and two. So that both players can be on screen at the same time there are fewer camera switches. Whereas in single player you might get two or three different views as you move around, in co-op mode it will tend to stick with one wide angle shot. Occasionally this can make it hard to find your way around a level if you've not played through it before but once you've found the path it's not a problem. Also, any large objects that might obscure your view are thankfully made transparent.
There are a few missteps present. A couple of the levels contain rather annoying and arbitrary time constraints, such as when you have to escape from some falling rocks. The co-op mode for some reason doesn't allow for any checkpoints, when you have to repeat an opening part of a level again and again it can make things a tad tiresome. The game is also a little short but this is because they've packed a lot into each level. I would argue this makes for a much more enriching game experience than if they had attempted to drag things out for the sake of it. And even though there are extra characters to unlock as well some other goodies, I found myself playing through the levels time and time again simply because they were so much fun.
With Return of the King EA haven't tried to reinvent the wheel. By focussing on delivering a specific game genre, rather then trying to mix and match too many styles, they've managed to avoid the usual pitfalls that plague many film tie-in games. Instead they have concentrated on distilling the best action they can out of Tolkein's, (or should that now be Jackson's) masterpiece and presenting it in a well executed package. Lord of the Ring fans could surely want for nothing more this Christmas.
