Another cool feature are the way superfluous missions are given to the player. While cruising the streets Nick picks up calls from Dispatch telling him of non-story related crimes happening about the city. Taking these missions is totally up to the player and while not solving them has no effect on the story, successful completion rewards Nick with Police Shields. These shields can be spent at various locations around the city to improve Nick's hand to hand and weapons based fighting skills. Again participating and completing these training sessions is completely down to the discretion of the player but do not affect the story in any way. The final interesting thing about the game is that you don't actually have to successfully complete the story missions in order to progress. Failure of the missions merely results in Nick taking an earful from his chief in true Starsky and Hutch style.
Unfortunately, an unusual and well executed game structure cannot distract from the fact that there are a few problems with the main mechanics of the game. For a car-based title the controls for driving are very twitchy and unforgiving which really lets the game down seeing as it is such a big part of it. Also while driving around the city there are very noticeable pauses while driving around which really jolts you out of the rhythm of driving. Also the fighting system is quite simplistic, and while more involved than Grand Theft Auto, it still leaves something to be desired. However the biggest crime that True Crime is guilty of is the shooting mechanic. Holding down the fire button slows time down for a short period and you can then move the cursor over the target and let rip, but the targeting is so twitchy it is a wonder you can shoot anything with any degree of accuracy at all.
Graphically the game is okay, although the reliance on effects to make the city seem a little shinier gets a little annoying and distracting at times. The characters are all rendered very nicely and the cars, while not particularly glamorous, are solid and full of variety. The soundtrack is enough to whet the appetite of any wannabe gangsta rapper and if that's not your bag then there is the odd hint of Heavy Metal too. Christopher Walken makes an appearance as a voice actor but unfortunately he lacks the zing that he is famous for; but such big Hollywood talent appearing in a videogame is always welcome regardless.
Understandably you could be forgiven for thinking that the game is pretty lousy in places but, like GTA which comes with its own selection of problems, it manages to pull them all together into something that is quite compelling. While it is not as exciting or vast in terms of scope as the Grand Theft Auto series, it is certainly a fun and reasonably slick game. Whilst a certain sense of Deja Vu is detectable, it still manages to bring enough interesting and new features to the table to make it worthwhile should you not be able to wait until the next GTA game.

if you own a game cube or can't get vice city for some reason or another and you want a vice city type game get this but unless that is the case i would recomend against it the shooting interface is quite hard to use it's more like a set of squares than a circle if you know what i mean the camera is very tough to work around the street crime idea is good but there is only 5 or so types of crime the good cop bad cop idea is good but the good cop is actually very hard to achieve and very strange and your bad cop route is short i give them mad props for mapping la but i would stick to liberty city instead of la

Sorry, but 82 is pretty low score to this game. It is much better then GTA3 and Vice city together [ i have finished it], it is inovating, and it has GREAT atmosphere of B-movies with Jet Li. This is surely one of the best games in my life! My rating is 95%.

This game is just plain sweet. It's fun to try and be the good cop. Even when they have they're hands up and seem to be giving up, they could throw down on you at the last minute and take you completely by surprise. Although it isn't near as interactive as GTA:Vice City, it is really and truly an amazing game. And now if I ever go to LA, I won't have to buy a map.

Vice City has better driving physics. In Vice City, cars don't just slide like inanimate bars of soap into sidewalks when hit from the side. I love the driving maneuvers that you learn as you progress in True Crime, but these button combinations make being a good driver too easy. Lastly, I HATE the L3 stick on the Playstation 2 controller. At least in Vice City you had a choice between using the L3 "nipple stick" and the normal D-pad to steer vehicles.
The game could have been way better that what it turned out to be. What a Let Down!

get underground. if u want to be a street race but dont have the money get it. it is alot of fun. their are 112 races to keep u besy. u unlock a new sticker or performence upgarde every race!!! i love it.:-)

Vice City is more interactive as in the city is better. Its not repetitive, you can actually go into buildings. You can find parked cars which is nonexistant in true crimes, except in the parking garage. Not many car varieties, you cant fly a helicopter or drive a boat, but I admit the driving skills aspect is better, and the shooting when your in a car. But holding a AK47 with one hand? cmon unrealistic. The GTA crew should work with the TRUE CRIME crew to make somethin like GTA True crime.
