The most important addition to Warcraft III, and the thing that separates it from its peers in the RTS genre is the hero units. For those of you who have not yet purchased Warcraft III but who played Starcraft, the heroes of W3 are a different kettle of fish entirely. They are no longer nice additions to an army, but the very backbone of it. Each side has three hero units, with each corresponding roughly to melee, magic or cunning, and each hero possesses four abilities – three regular and one ultimate. Hero spells range from direct damage or area effect spells, to buffs and summoning. Other abilities include the Human magical hero’s ability to teleport large numbers of troops instantaneously. Low-level heroes are powerful troops in their own right; high-level heroes will turn the tide of a battle.

The addition of heroes are just one of the methods Blizzard have used to curb the use of “rush tactics” – building a lot of one particular unit type and charging in. The unit count has been lowered to 90 (compared to Starcraft’s 200), meaning that you simply cannot build more than a handful of the most powerful units. Also new is the upkeep system, which effectively reduces resource collection efficiency for larger armies. This forces players to be careful about the units they build, since simply building a horde of grunts will be largely ineffective and will sap resources. Units also have particular “counters” – units that perform well against them –meaning that massing one unit type is less effective anyway. The combination of these factors means that the most effective army in Warcraft III has a bit of everything – a bit of air defence, some heavy melee units, spell casters and ranged plus a good hero or two. This necessary unit variety means that the best players will always be those who have good micromanagement skills. This may not sit easily with some players, particularly those who enjoy sticking to their favoured units in other RTS games.
Most of the pre-release hype surrounding Warcraft III was concentrated on the multiplayer, thanks to the well-publicised beta. But the single player campaign has been a pleasant surprise, and demonstrates the emphasis Blizzard place on story. The campaign begins with a prologue Orc campaign lasting only a couple of missions, and provides an excellent tutorial to the game. Quickly you realise the importance the game places on unit micromanagement, and also on the central role hero units are given. Like Starcraft, the campaigns must be played in order, with the Human campaign first and ending with the newcomer Night Elves. The plot is unravelled continuously from the focal point of each race, and is not simply rehashed from a different perspective each time. The result is a very long and convoluted plot, with plenty of interesting developments and characters.
The single player missions themselves will not hold many surprises for veteran RTS players, with base building missions being joined by several other familiar types. Some see the player defending an area or particular unit for a set time, which usually boils down to doing a whole lot of nothing for 27 minutes, followed by 3 minutes of all hell breaking loose. These missions are probably the games hardest, and for me, the least enjoyable, since there is no way to tell whether your defences are adequate for the last minute rush of the enemy, leading to intense frustration as you realise you must play the whole damn thing again as the computer nonchalantly wipes you out. Fortunately these missions are relatively few in number. There are also more RPG style missions that involve a hero and some units exploring a map trying to accomplish a set objective. These missions are similar to those found in Starcraft, but are much more enjoyable because of the real differences heroes have from ordinary units.

I wanted a RPS, dernit! One reason I hate RTS games is they're all about micromanagement. I don't exactly mind the micromanagement as long as I have time to make decisions and study things instead of franticly clicking all over the place. I mean, this is why Real World militaries have a hierarchy for leadership. This way the commander doesn't have to tell each individual troop what to do and can focus more on the big picture. Even handling 90 units is replacing the job of about 10 squad leaders, 3 people to manage the squads, and an additional person to tell those three what to do, and the almost omniscient viewpoint doesn't exactly make up for that kind of manpower. Turn based strategies offer someone enough time to fill all of these roles and make it still a strategy game, not a click fest.
warcraft 3 is an exellent follow up in the warcraft series unlike other RTS games this one has a cool story and has nice demo's. It's the first one of which I really watch them follow the text.
Warcraft = Ownage
WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos is an excellent twist to the traditional RTS genre. It provides a simple mix between RPG and RTS, making heros level up and gain spells. This game is definately a must have for all fans of RTS. The story is intriguing and compelling and you'd play it from start to finish. The only concern to me is the 90 food supply limit, which really limits the amount of units occupy your forces.

THis game is the best much better then any other game. i rate it a 99% oddly enough it got a 96% in PCGamer and Warcraft2 got a 98% because of upkeep annoying and pathfinding! My opinion(Night Elves are great orcs are really good Humans are ok and undead are cheap as heck they got a great story but i guess it could use work!

I myself was utterly overwhelmed with this game, I just cannot effectively hunt out creeps and make units good enough to be victorious.
I myself think the RPG elements are incredibly dumb to put into the game, save all the RPG crap for World of Warcraft.
This game probably has the steepest learning curve of all the Blizzard games ever made, and surely fit's the developer's namesake... Blizzard:Overwhelming and annoying

I wish that i can play more of your warcraft games because i think they are brilliant. I have also experienced other games that are as good. But almost all of them are not as good as warcraft games.
Warcraft 3 is the coolest game ever it is my life, my religion, but on the custom games it's not fair I have about 3 grunts and they have an entire army already! I was attacking a night elf base once and one of their wisps went over to build an ancient of war, three seconds later it's finished! After that it trained about 7 huntresses in less that 10 seconds!
