Star Wars: Republic Commando
A "squad-based FPS with some added twists," says Sam Gibson...
The AI of your fellow troops is exemplary. They will throw the right grenades depending on the type of enemy and heal themselves during lulls in the fighting. They will also come and resuscitate you if you get 'killed', with the game only ending if all four commandoes are downed as this leaves no-one to deliver the Lazarus effect. Occasionally they will stumble into your line of fire but a few bullets in the back tends to put them into a crouch, allowing you to fire over their heads. They won't bunch up around doorways and corners and even do a passable job of taking up supportive firing positions even when you aren't manoeuvring them manually into tactical positions. I only experienced one or two fleeting problems with getting boxed in by my team-mates, but considering the rather constrained nature of most of the levels this was an impressive achievement. The AI strikes the right balance between independent team-mates who don't have to be led by the hand and unstoppable robotic killing machines which leave little left for the player to kill. I really did feel like I was part of a team as my troops would take care of themselves and their squadmates with a level of cooperation that would put most human players to shame.
The enemies behave with rather less sophistication. They're not scared to toss in the occasional grenade and will make use of any cover they happen to be standing right next to, but generally speaking they are content to stand their ground and face off with an exchange of blaster fire. However, while they may not make for very convincing soldiers, the developers have worked hard to ensure that there's a good mix of different opponents in each staged fire fight. So while there are only twelve different enemies throughout the entire game, they are mixed and matched to such an effective degree that the lack of variety in their make-up is offset by a challenging range of different combat situations. So while you will battle against the droid army in every level of the game, fighting a cluster of battle droids on their own in an open hanger is a different experience to fighting them in a twisty jungle trail. Throw in some tough super-battle droids and the occasional Droideka or even a bowel loosening spider-droid and the player is left facing an array of diverse and entertaining firefights. There's a decent physics engine running in the background and even if this is mostly relegated to throwing ragdolls around it does liven up the proceedings. The number of amusing death animations also help to boost the entertainment factor.
On the other hand, Republic Commando is utterly linear. There are no alternative routes to explore, no superfluous rooms or obstacles with multiple solutions and the scripted events are near ubiquitous. The designers funnel you from one encounter to another with no break from the relentless march onwards. And while it's certainly no Far Cry, I never got worked up about the lack of choice I was given. The action is driven enough to leave little time for consideration of anything other than achieving your objectives. I felt freed from the responsibility of having to navigate and managed to get lost on no more than a couple of occasions. Republic Commando doesn't pretend to be the second coming of squad based shooters, preferring to refine each aspect of its structure to such a degree that issues of linearity and the lack of player freedom are brusquely relegated to the back of the mind as you enjoy the fiercely engaging action. While the campaign is an unrestrained action adventure, the multiplayer side of Republic Commando left me underwhelmed. All of the tactical elements are removed from the multiplayer leaving nothing but mundane FPS deathmatches and capture the flag. There are a small number of maps and although they are mostly well laid out and offer some enjoyable blasting action, there's nothing here that compels you to play for any great length of time. For some unfathomable reason there's no co-operative play, which for a game that is all about squad-based combat this is a ridiculous omission. Annoyingly chat only comes through your main speakers, so with no way of relegating it to the headset you have to endure shouted inanities at the same volume as the rest of the game's sounds. The multiplayer exists only because you expect to have it an FPS and in no way should be seen as a reason to buy or rent the game.
No, the reasons to get this game all lie in the single player campaign. While some may despair about the ever-present guiding hand of the designers, it is the constant presence of this phantom guide that helps to make Republic Commando such a tight and focused game. It's been a while since I played a game which has been so comprehensively designed to be a cohesive and complete experience. Each aspect of the game, the slick manoeuvring system, the intuitive weapon selection structure, the audio and visual clues, the always amusing visor-wiper and many others have all been carefully thought out and diligently implemented. There's very little to find fault with this game. However, the inclusion of co-op would have greatly extended the overall life of the game. With the single player campaign lasting around ten hours with next to non-existent replay value, Republic Commando's biggest liability is its brevity. Just about everything else works flawlessly and the presentation is impeccable, although one could level the criticism that the game lacks a bit of a soul. Which, given the tone of the prequel films, is either a masterstroke of imitation or another slight scratch in the game's shiny veneer. The story isn't instantly forgettable and for fans of the films the lure of fighting in the Clone Wars without having to resort to some poxy glowing stick to provide the thrills should be an enticing prospect. Republic Commando is like a big fat juicy steak cooked to perfection. Utterly familiar, it still manages to be a very satisfying and enjoyable experience. Even if you aren't a fan of the Star Wars universe it's a supremely well crafted game which stands a very good chance of satisfying your gaming appetite, even if it is only for a short period of time.

I really enjoyed playing this game but then it finished, I mean it has like 3 levels, thats just messed up and shows lazy development, compare it with the ammount in say halo and it looks like a demo of a game thats comming out next year or something.
Great game, but multiplayer is admittedly crummy
me personly i didint like it
me personly i didint like it
is this a full download of star wars
Well, if you compare everything to Halo then you're bound to be disappointed at every other game. I mean, halo is the ultimate. At least the Starwars people tried.
THIS GAMES KICKED ASS
Needs More Campain Levels
Yeah, great single player even though it is short. Halo is not ultimate... it just doesn't have much competition in the Xbox. Just like Mircosoft doesn't, so they become the only one. Since it is cheaper to buy a Xbox then a computer capable of running current games at almost high settings, there are a lot of Xbox players. But if you ask a lot of PC users I doubt you will get Halo PC as the best. Most Halo fanatics are Xbox players. :-P
MINT :-)
where could i find a link for the full download of star wars republic commando
I got this game last yesterday. Good god I beat it already!!! I am somewhat dissapointed by this game. Gameplay=good. Storyline=ok. I hated how in some parts you could see and move your head but do nothing! I love how if you fire enough at your team mates, they try to kill you. Battle droids were not really needed. I guess they made good grunts, but they were not fun to kill. Grunts should we weak and pathetic, and when you kill them it should be fun. Trandoshans were stupid in this game, and it never explained their relasionship with the CIS
( CONFEDERACY OF INDEPENDENT SYSTEMS)
Out of 10 stars, I give this game an 8.5. It is worth buying.
One last thing- I thought it was wierd that 4 clone troopers could beat like, 4 of general grievous's guards when the guards can possess a threat to jedi?? It makes no sense! I wish the knife left marks. All that happens when you use the knife is that some gut's fly, but no marks. Why no marks???
Its a game worth buying but for 50 bucks get it somewhere else than future shop!
Me i personally loved it
You people aren't getting the point of this game. Because
1. It's a good game with loads of campaign levels{lv's or lvs] and it's got good enemies.
2. It has good grathics like 3D games like Lord of the rings and Super smash brothers: melee and you can play online which is cool and good.
I've got this game and i've completed it and I now play online on it because i've completed campaign so if your saying this game is rubbish then think again because i'll be calling you people cheeky bastards and other things!

I agree with Christopher from USA. You are right, but your making me jelious because I can't play it online. I've also completed it. My fav Commando is Rev and this game is amazing yeah!
Plez reply Chris
Hey, C Fish I also agree with you to.
I want to know what happened to my fav Commando Rev as well! They should make a sequel to Republic Commando!
See ya C Fish write back soon!
What I thought overall was it was 9/10! It is amazing and squad cammands are easy to use. But I thought, where is the jedi or sith. The most anoyingest enemies were Magnaguards, I mean whenever I tried shooting them they kept jumping around everywhere I was getting ****** off! Anyway Republic Commando is my fav Star Wars game. My most funniest bit was where I saw the Wookiees It was so funny when they just whack, kick, punch, headbutt or even slam those droid scum down! Great game, worth the money and glad I bought it!
what happend to sev at the end of the game
How Do You Play On Campain in multiplayer

its a good game but its WAY to short.....at least Halo has more missions!! hopefully they will make a 2nd Republic commando if they haven't already.
to 38, halo is not ultimate, its an alright game, I'll give it that, but thats because there isn't too much competition for it on the xbox. But if you ask a PC gamer they probably wont say halo PC games are the ultimate games of all time
i played the game and i hated how the guys in my squad got in my f'n way when i would try to kill the bad guys. then they get themselves killed by going up to super battle droid and trying to knock him out. i loved the options, guns, grenades, effects, color, and the music!
